I just got a used 8800gts recently. I've been benching this thing a bit and it seems there isn't a big performance difference between the G92 cores.

I overclocked the 8800gs 729/1728/1060 vs 8800gts 670/1728/972

Crysis high detail patch 1.2 no AA
1920x1080
8800gs 23 fps
8800gts 27 fps
15% difference

3dmark2k6 1920x1080
8800gs 9545
8800gts 10436
9% difference

1920x1080 4xAA
8800gs 6952
8800gts 7547
8% difference

So I'm not impressed with this upgrade. 8800gts was a high end card and 8800gs was mid range and the performance difference is rather a small one. I thought I would see 25% more fps but I did not.

There you have it. Since they are both G92, I wouldn't expect too much difference. The only difference is the SP number, 96 in the GS and 128 in the GTS. And you overclocked the GS much more than the GTS, reducing some of the performance difference. I think you came expecting too much out of a card very similar to your old one.

Azn, what happens if you rerun that comparo with the OC in your sig now (756/1836/1058)?

It's not just the SP though. The 8800gs is 1/4 of the cluster disabled. 8800gs has 12ROP 96SP/48TMU 192bit memory bus. While GTS has 16ROP, 128SP/64TMU 256bit bus. Not to mention the 8800gs is sitting with only 384mb of vram while GTS has 512mb.

I'm still working on that. I haven't found the right overclock yet. It seems to pass ATITOOL with 0 errors but it crash when I'm actually running a benchmark.

You looked at average fps. Look at the minimum fps and you should be seeing a much faster GTS. And you've only used Crysis, in which both cards are struggling, especially at 1920X1080 and it's normal that you've seen such a small difference. Do some more games benchmarks, both cards at stock clocks and you'll surely have some serious difference.

It seems ATITOOL only scan for artifacts with Core and Memory clocks not shader. Shader clocks were locking me up in games.

Crysis 1920x1080
756/1728/1060
29 fps

I gained a whopping 6fps once it was all done with Crysis.

Gained another 2fps. Kind of a bad overclocker then again it was factory overclocked card.

With the 8800gs I gained 8fps from the overclock at the same setting.

Well going from a 9600GSO to my 9800GT, I found most games run a better by about 15% average. Seems like the normal for them to run similar depending on the clock rate.

There might be something wrong with your 8800GTS G92. The 8800GTS is faster than a 8800GT, which is faster than a 8800GS/9600GSO for everything except for folding.

Crysis @ high is GPU hungry so I tested that. I gained about 20% after the overclock although the core was overclocked a little bit more than 8800gs. Not quite the 25% I was hoping for.

Next step up is extra $100 for those GTX 260 or 4870 and gains would be another 25% side way upgrade. I think I'll wait until price drops.
