8800gs or 9600gt?

Hey guys,

I'm going to upgrade my gfx from a 7900gs. I run at 1600x1200 res and would like to use AA and AF. However, I don't know which card to get, the 8800gs or 9600gt.

What are the differences? Is one better than the other at my resolution? The evga 8800 can be had for about 110 AR, and the PALIT 9600 is like 125 AR, both from newegg. I've never heard of PALIT before, so I don't know if they are a good brand?

Can anyone make any comparisons between these two cards? Which one is the better choice?

Thanks in advance,
Cheezeit

Not necessarily AF since 8800gs has more texture fillrate than 9600gt. AA however is where 9600gt shines. Pretty much on par other wise.

For 1600x1200 and AA you should go with 9600gt. That extra 128mb of vram helps in those situations.

I only got the 8800gs because I'm only on a 19" monitor.

I get nearly 38fps high quality @ 1440x900 in Crysis. Check out my review few posts down.

I got more than 25% overclock out of it.

the benchmarks i've seen the 8800gs genreally is worse at high res and high quality because it only has 384 mb vs 512mb and the memory bandwidth.

check benchmarks for like UT3 at 1920x1200 or crysis.

but for most other games they are about the same.

The benchmark discrepancies could boil down to drivers. The 9600GT uses the 174 driver whereas the 8800GS uses the 169 driver.

For the $15, I would get the 9600, but I might have to eat my shorts after seeing how the 8800GS does on the 174 driver. :Q
