Overpriced when you can get an 8800GT 512MB for $190 now and an 8800GT 256MB for the same price ($180~). HD 3850 is $150-160 and it's probably just as fast.

9600 GT is just around the corner too, and should be closer to the HD3850 price range... Most tests I've seen from Engrish tech blogs have the 9600 GT outperforming the 8800 GS.

No need to exaggerate. I've been watching prices for the 8800GT 512 and even after rebate the cheapest price is still over $200.

Prove me wrong.

I never thought we'd see the 8800GS. I thought the 9600GT was going to replace it, before it was even released.

Quit nitpicking on the $0.54 :p We all know that we would spend the additional ~$10 to get the 8800GT, unless you're extremely averse to rebates.

Wow, quite a silent release.

Weren't these originally going to be OEM/white box only?

I think this is just a limited release by a few board partners. There's no place for the 8800GS in nVidia's lineup with the 9600GT coming soon, which should be cheaper to produce as the chip has 64 SPs vs 128 in the G92. 8800GS is just a really castrated G92 with only 384MB of memory and that's not the best solution.

Yeah, NVIDIA got a little blindsided by the HD3850 and HD3870 street prices being so much lower... so they decided to put the 8800GS on shelves rather than keep it just an OEM one-off. If you need a cheap card now, this is probably slightly better overall for gaming than an HD3850. The HD3850's pros are it's probably quieter and UVD is better than PureVideo in terms of image quality.

I wouldn't be using that Galaxy 8800GT as an indicator of overall 8800GT pricing. Non-reference design, backed by who knows, for how long. Doesn't compare to what you get from an EVGA, XFX, or BFG. So, a more realistic current price range for the 8800GT is $220-250, depending on clock speed and bundle software (or lack thereof).

Still, the GS seems way over-priced. Unfortunately a lot of people will probably fall for this, not knowing what $20-40 more would bring them.

DailyTech linked this review today:

http://www.driverheaven.net/re...s/XFXGS_3850/index.php

The 8800GS 394MB at 680/1700 beat out the 3850 256MB pretty badly. Some of the benchmarks are pretty close, and the 3850 wins one, but most of them have the 8800GS delivering a sound beating. But keep in mind the one in the tests is at 680core/1700mem, which is the same core clock but 100mhz faster in the memory than the $170 card at NewEgg.

I think $160 is a very fair price considering a 512MB GT is ~$230 as you noted. I was going to say the HD3850 was a better deal when it was priced at $180, but the quick price drop changes things...

I like the fact that XFX isnt pulling that 25 or 50mhz bump crap- a full 100 on the GPU and 200 on the RAM higher than the base model- thats worth it.

That's just confusing. Nvidia has caught up to the same naming scheme that ATI was at a couple years ago with the 9xxx. I enjoyed my 9800 pro AIW.

At the end of the review, they showed that the HD3870 beat out the overclocked 8800GS, and I would suspect that the HD3850 should overclock to HD3870 speeds. Still, not a bad card for $170. However, I bet the 9600GT will debut about this price, and have 512mb of RAM.
