8800 Ultra

He probably has another ultra in his rig. He adds a second one to improve performance, heat and power consumption. 🙂
 
It runs old obscure games slightly better because the sexy beast can push more pixels (33% more) and has more bandwidth than its newer (G92) brethren. The GTX260 can push 10% more pixels though (albeit at $200), so I would say, if you can get an 8800 Ultra for like $70 and you're playing badly programmed old games, then its not a bad idea. Even better if you go SLI.
 
I'd say that 8800 ultra in SLI is pretty darn fast. You can't complain about performance with them in any game today. It goes beyond one gtx 285 in performance.
 
its a waste of money since even if he finds one it will be $300+ the GTX's i have seen for sale still go for 260-300. Just buy a GTX260/ATI 4870/90
 
Well, Astralite nailed it. I already have a 4870 1GB so I am just looking for a card that can play my older games properly and the 8800 Ultra fits the bill; it is also a quieter card that doesn't sound like a freaking jet engine when you boot your pc. My 4870 1GB is unable to do those things and has other annoying issues with it. I don't know about how the newer GTX 200 series cards perform in older games or if they have a jet engine like fan (I had owned a 9800gtx+ previously in the summer of 2008 and it had a loud fan) so that is why I asked about the 8800 Ultra. Right now value isn't top priority either.

@OP: my gtx 260 is quiet as a mouse. I'd look for one of those, instead. Its theoretical potential is higher, it's probably cheaper, and you could benchmark all your games and compare with us!! After benchmarking you could also sell the 4870 1gb for about what you paid for the gtx 260, too.

Is your GTX260 a reference design? What about the GTX285 reference card, does it have a quiet fan as well, preferably one as quiet as the original G80 based 8800's? I am still unsure about how the GTX200 series cards handle older games though.
 
Depends on how badly programmed the game is and how much of it is just pixel pushing. For example, if you were playing an Aurora derivative game you'd see virtually 0 difference between a 285 and an 8800 Ultra.

I am still unsure about the performance of the GTX200 in older games since according to GPU review, the 4870 destroys my old graphics card, the G80 8800GTS in every aspect: pixel fillrate, texture fillrate, memory bandwidth, and flops.

You would think it would be equal or slightly faster at least, and yet the fvcking 4870 performs like sh!t in a couple of my favourite older games, its not even funny. The older G80 cards are the only cards I know of that will play my older games well (and at the same time being quiet), and I was looking at the Ultra in particular because it can also handle newer games a bit better than the other G80 cards. I don't really want to buy another card and be stuck with two modern cards that can't play those games. Sorry I just had to let off some steam.
