Hi guys, i recently upgraded my system here are the specs:
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Athlon 1600 XP
Radeon 9700pro
256mb DDR 2100 generic single stick

I would have thought this would be quite a high spec system but i still seem to only be able to pull 8800 in PCMark 2001 SE...I would have thought i would be able to pull more or is this a high enuf score for my kind of system? Any help would be appreciated..Thanks

Are your games playable? If so, then your system is good. If not, then you might need to upgrade. I wouldn't put too much faith into 3DMark. I ran 3DMark2003, just to see the Mother Nature scene. It was cool for sure, but I only got like 2,000 3D Marks. Does that mean my computer sucks?

I don't know. I can play BF1942@1600x1200 with 2x FSAA and it plays fine. I can't imagine needing my computer to be any faster at playing games for the next 6 months anyway.

But, yeah, 8800 isn't a bad score.

Alot of the 3dmark scores you see are mainly because of other reasons. Just having a Radeon 9700 Pro won't give you a 15,000 mark. 3dmark really likes FSB and bandwidth. That's why all the rare 15k+ 3dmark scores you see will either be based on 1700+ processors or 2100+ processors, cuz they are really the only ones that can hit 200FSB or higher (and maintain a rescpetable multiplier). So bottom line, if 3dmark means tHAT much to you, then I suggest:

Get a stick of HyperX PC3000. ($50)
Get a 2100+ T-Bred B processor. ($90)

Overclock the 2100+ to 200x12 if possible, if not, 200x11. Then up the ram to 200FSB.

This, combined with your Radeon 9700 Pro should give you scores upwards of 13k and 14k.

You will probably notice a big increase in system performance too, as going from 1.4GHz @ 133fsb ... to 2.2GHz @ 200fsb will be a big leap.

But anyways, even though your 3dmarks will double, your system performance most certainly will not. This is why 3dmark is basically a useless program that doesn't mean a helluv alot when it comes to how good PC's are.... but it's good for bragging to ur friends ;)

ill do that when the money starts flowing again, thanks guys, was just thinking OMG OMG WTH!? It will play games fast enough for me although it has been known to run slower than my old Nvidia TNT2....but that could bve related to my downgrade from 512 pc 33 to 256 DDR 2100..who knows!

muahahahahahaha, my geforce4 ti4200 crushes your raddy 9700 with a score of 11,200,000

just kidding, i know the raddy is faster, you probably should have spent your money on a memory upgrade instead of that raddy

The sad thing is I have a GF3 and get more than 9200 in 3dMark2001, but I have a XP 2400+ and 512MB of PC3200 DDR RAM. Your CPU and smaller amount of RAM is being the bottleneck now.

Why not just sell your 1600+ and the 256MB DDR?

You could probably get like $50 for them combined.... then go and spend $140 on a 1700+ JIUHB and a 512MB stick of PC3000 Hyper X. Only a $90 upgrade and you will be cruising. The crappy 1600+ and that crappy ram don't do the god of all video cards justice!!!!!
