8800 GTX Vs 8800 GTS

I am building the system you can see in the signature. I have been out of touch with gaming for quite some now and am building this to get back and have some fun. I am reusing my old monitor and have not yet picked up the 8800 GTX. After some discussions in another section, I am now contemplating if I should step back to the 8800GTS because I wouldn't be able to play at resolution above 1280 X 1024. I have no plans of changing the monitor any time now. I don't mind spending the money for a GTX but I am now in doubt if I need that kind of power for this resolution.

I was wondering if it made more sense to pick up the GTX because once new games that can make use of the G80's power come out, maybe it might be difficult to get better frame rates at higher resolutions than 1280. Also, I notice that there is quite a significant performance difference between the 2 8800's.

If you were already going to get it then I say get it. At that resolution you wont have to upgrade for a long time, so it'll probably save you some money in the long run.

If you dont mind upgrading a little sooner and could spend the difference between GTS and GTX elsewhere in your system, then I would do that.

I just posted in a thread similar to this. Honestly, the 8800 series cards are meant for 24" or 30" monitors and their respective resolutions. A GTX would probably be overkill for a 19" monitor. Save your money and get the GTS if you want an 8800.

I have a 7900 gto right now on my 19" viewsonic and it plays every game flawlessly 1280x1024, high settings, aa/af on. Between the problems I've heard people experiencing with G80 drivers and the fact that my monitor is relatively small, it keeps me from blowing my money on an 8800.

I am shelling out quite some money on this PC. So I don't expect to upgrade for a long time, say 2 years minimum.

As for a 7900GTO, you are probably right about playing every game available now flawlessly at 1280 X 1024. However, when I know that I am not going to upgrade in a long time, doesn't the G80 make more sense because it should help with DX10 games which are expected in the future? I am tempted to the G80 for the same reason and I hope Nvidia fixes the issues with newer drivers. However, my biggest concern is between the different variants of the G80.

When will people stop that bullshit about "overkill" ? THERE IS NO SUCH THING IN THE HARDWARE WORLD! If you get a GTX it will last you alot longer, so that offsets any "overkill" it might have with current games (which it doesnt, by the way, since you can crank up 16xAA and AF)

In any case, some of the bloatware games coming out these days actually justify that power even at lower resolutions and AA levels. SC: Double Agent is one example and Rainbox Six: Vegas is looking like another one, from some of the comments in the Software section.

Rainbow Six Vegas runs very well on my computer (I was surprised too).

With no AA (but HDR) and 8xAF the game runs pretty dam good and it actually looks nice too.
I was extremely shocked at how well it played. I thought it would be another Splinter Cell.

This is with the two settings that have high/medium/low set to Medium and everything else On except for vertical sync.

Just get what you can afford. If you want to get a 8800GTX and shove it up in all our faces and say "I got an 8800GTX so haha" its your choice. Either one will do for what you need it for.

If you choose to get an 8800 GTS/X, and dont' care about which brand you get, they're XFX. May I recommend buying from Dell? I got the 8800 GTS this week for $380 with free shipping, I had to pay tax, making it $413. The GTX will cost $534 with free shipping.

On top of that I believe that the real difference in performance (which is not depicted that much if you O/C your GTS right now) between 8800GTS/GTX will be more apparent in D3D10 API..

Even at 1280x1024 theres a significant difference between the GTS & the GTX ... considering that Dell deal I suggest you jump on the GTX & don't look back.
