8800 gtx or ultra worth it to get NOW?

I am getting my cheque this friday and im really tempted to buy a whole new comp (quad 6600 2.4ghz, 680i, gtx or ultra). So i have been working hard at my job just to get a new comp for unreal 3, crysis, call of duty 4, starcraft 2, farcry 2, and a few others. I know that its been almost a year already that the 8800 line up has been out, and for a fact i know that a new card is on the horizon from nvidia and ati. So any opinions on if its worth it to fork out 650-750 canadian for a gtx or ultra 8800 (including tax) only to be replaced in a couple of months.

Depends on how patient you are, the new high end cards should be out next year, possibly in the spring. If you can wait, go for the release of the 9800gtx but if you can't, get a gts and upgrade later. Also, another thing to consider is the penryn release which should be sometime in November.

What PC do you have now? You may be able to run those games pretty decently to hold you off until the new hardware comes out.

shitty ass slow comp 6800gt, amd 64 2.4ghz, 1 gig ram. Thats the thing i might not be able to hold off. Next spring? i thought this november something new will come out, if not the 9800 maybe a 8900 for sure, are you just making an educated guess on the spring thing.

I wouldn't bother- a refresh is just around the corner however if you need to upgrade immediately then you could get a EVGA GTX/ Ultra and use the step up program in a few months time to purchase the new top end video card for a small cost.

thats the thing i dont mind doing but the evga step up thing, like i dont know if it will work 100%. Arnt they picky about what they choose to upgrade, for example i get the ultra now even for 700 (including tax) or even the gts (450 with tax). ANd then the 8900 refresh comes out, and so i get the 8900 (before 90 days) what do i pay? the difference? and once again arnt there so many god damn restrictions and only CERTAIN times they will do the step up, not 100% guarunteed is what im getting at???

F$CK F$CKING decisions pissing me off, i work so hard for the money and now choosing is so hard. I dont want to regret any purchase. the only thing i see of doing is the evga thing and then do a step up, but i dont know if the step up is 100% guarunteed.

If you *have* to spend money today, I would recommend you get a 512mb 8800 GT ($250) this november and it should hold you off until mid-next year before you drop cash for a new comp.

That's what I'm thinking of myself personally, something cheap that lets me play games at an "okay" framerate for another half year before the next big CPU/GPU comes out. It's the worst possible time to buy a top end (GPU or CPU) at this point since it's pretty much the end of the current cycle.

this sucks so bad, unreal 3, cryis, call of duty 4 all out in early nov. This sucks major donkey b*lls. This really really really sucks, release the god damn penyrn mainstream cpus and next refresh of cards before november, that would be the best thing to do marketing wise, g*y nvidia and g*y intel, i hate those ba*tards. I really dont know if i can control myself, i might just accidently go into a store and come out with a quad q6600, 680i (once again no pci express 2.0 support for next gen cards), 2 gigs of ram, and video card (i still dont know which). I know i will enjoy it but only for 1-3 months, then pure regrets forever. Because i am quiting this job soon and wont have money, going back to university. Nothing i can do now expect be all mad & bitch & complain. Im so mad i feel like killing everybody at work tommorow with an ak-47 (not literaly).

The only thing you would ever really regret is dropping that much cash on your computer, because gaming still has some peculiar bottlenecks. Whether you dropped 2k or 10k on your comp, current gen games will always hit some sort of minimum fps wall.

When you are playing games in an intense scene and it's a complete slideshow with a good comp, you can be rest assured the guy who spent 5-6 times more than you is only doing about 15-30% better. and 15-30% better than unplayable is still more or less unplayable.

its under 2k, i put all the stuff together in tiger direct. its 1500 total for a 8800 gtx, 680i, q6600 2.4 quad core, 2 gig crosair 800mhz, power supply 700 watts sli ocz. omg i just cannot take this waiting anymore, driving me insane, then the regret part after 1-2 months of purchase. INSANITY NOW OR REGRET IN 1-3 MONTHS, what to choose, IM LOSING MY MINDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. I wish i was millionare.

Millionaires have bigger things to worry about, one of them being evading taxes. As the adage goes, mo' money, mo' problems. Anyhow, a GTX will be able to play these games at launch just fine. A G92 SLI setup might be a better bet than one GTX and will run on decent power supplies.

This is the way computer gaming has always been. Hardware is inherently a depreciating asset. If you do not believe highend hardware today will yield playable framerates at your desired resolution in games coming out next month, don't buy now. Simple as that. If you are considering murdering people over pieces of fiberglass and silicon, you may have more significant issues to tend to.

johndoe: take a chill pill and stop acting like a child before one of the mods sends you back to isolation.

Besides, the games you list aren't even out yet (you say early Nov), so why not wait until they are released, and then jump on the latest-and-greatest gfx card.

With any market there are good times to buy and better times to buy. If you wait forever you won't end up with anything.

If you plopped down the money for a GTX or Ultra right now it would serve you well for years to come and offer the highest level of performance you can get currently. Either card is a great choice.

If you waited a month or so and see what ATi and nVidia have to offer around Christmas time you may be able to buy an even better product than right now - or you might not.

If it were me I would wait until Christmas and see what gets released - if something better comes out, get that, if not you can always get a GTX or Ultra as they will still be on the market.

I have two 8800 GTXs in SLI and love them!

I don't agree with that at all. If you spend $250 now and then in six months spend $350-400 on the new "high end" card you have effectively paid much more than it would cost to buy the high end card now right now...

I'm swinging on the fence too but I think I'll be waiting to see how it all pans out and then get myself a new card in November AFTER all the major games and the new Nvidia card are released.

Just do it, but don't get a GTX. Get an 8800GTS 320MB (if under 24"). OC it and sell it later. The rest of the rig will be good to go for a while. Get a P35 mobo instead. Runs cooler and oc's with less effort.

I live in Jamaica and I can probably resell this card for exactly what I paid for it or maybe even a little more.

Paid US$280...

I'm sure I can get US$278 for it and I can probably get US$305 for it if I'm lucky.

Yet you will get a card that is fast enough, then a card that is MUCH MUCH faster than ANYTHING available now.

Some here and some there is not as bad as spending alot of money right away today.
