Hello everyone!

I was wondering if it was worth buying an 8800 GTS without planning to buy Vista?

You see I don't really want to switch to Vista until it reaches at least SP 1... which is in about a year and a half I think... And without Vista, there will be no DX10 for me and no DX10 games of course....

I'm also planning on buying a Core 2 Duo 6400 and 2 GB of PC6400 800 MHz and overclocking the bus to 400 MHz... The LCD is going to be 19'...

Am I just better getting a 7900GT and buying a GeForce 9600 GT in the future?

Have you seen the benchmarks? Of course it is worth it, DX9 is where it will be for the near future. By the time DX10 is out in full force the 8800 will probably an 80 dollar budget card.

What I mean is... is it worth spending 500$ instead of 170$ (EVGA 7900 GS) for running DX9 games for over a year and a half at 1280x960... I mean, I don't really need to run Oblivion at 38 fps (according to anandtech) with HDR and everything crank up to enjoy the game... do I?

only you can answer this question

i just upgraded from an x850xt to a 1950p ... as far as i can go with AGP ... for another year

and it was expensive ...

i DID play Oblivion with mostly everything maxed ... but no Grass to get playable FPS ... now i can get Grass on Max plus HDR ...

and yes, it is worth it ... to me

IF i could get a 8800 in AGP, i'd go for it ...

just remember, games are getting more demanding over the next year or so. ;)

your call of course

It would definitely be worth it to me, if I could afford it. Just because you don't utilize DX 10, doesn't mean you can't enjoy the soother frame rates and considerably better image quality.
