8800 GTS, moving forward

Hi all,

I didn't find this answered on the forums here, so if a thread already exists please link it.

I've currently got a eVGA 8800 GTS 640 MB Superclocked (576 MHz Core) and while its an OK card, its not as good as a GT looks to be, as the GS has more stream processors and all...and seems to do better in Crysis and whatnot.

At this time, would it be recommended that I sell my GTS on ebay or on AT (been in use since August, no issues with it, its not been tampered with, etc - the eVGA warranty would transfer, yes?) and see about finding a 8800 GT? Or should I instead just wait on it (doesn't look like new gen cards are coming any time soon?)

Thanks.
RA

EDIT: How do the GTS SSC and then the GTS 512/1 GB models affect this decision?

Personally, I dont think upgrading from a 8800GTS 640 to a 8800GT is worth it but thats just me. I think you'd get more bang for the buck just waiting for the next gen cards to come out next year and then upgrade. Again, thats just my opinion. The 8800GTS 640 is no slouch for gaming. In your case I guess it comes down to just how bad do you want a 8800GT?

Not worth it. I sold my GTS 640s a few weeks ago and upgraded and I still ended up paying about $80 total out of pocket. You'll get even less for your card now. From a pure performance standpoint, the gain isn't very high and you should wait for new high-end cards to come out.

I think you could do pretty well. The GTS is selling from 210 to 220 on ebay right now. If you're willing to wait a couple weeks after ordering from dell you can get an MSI 8800gt shipped for 222.

Then if something better comes out, sell the GT on ebay for a profit and upgrade.

How long till next gen is out? I keep thinking I'll just wait, but how the heck long will it be - the fact they are pushing a new 512 and 1024 MB versions out of the GTS makes me think there won't be next gen for quite some time?

Seeing all the benchies, I am not motivated enough to dump my 8800GTS 640. However, I am searching for a reasonably priced 2nd 8800GTS 640. Scouring ebay daily. I'll get one eventually.
IMHO, not worth moving to 8800GT/GTS(G92) from 8800GTS.

If you OC and especially if you have an A3 G80 GTS/GTX, definitely not worth it. The G80 scales much better than the G92 with core clock increases. As the latest benches show with both the G80 GTS SSC and the G92 GTS, there just isn't that much difference between the GT/GTS and even the GTX when you run them at the same clock speeds.

In the last month I've run a G80 GTS, G80 GTX and a G92 GT and there's simply not that much difference between the cards at 1920. The GTX is faster, but its not enough to enable AA or add extra detail/shader/shadow quality options over the GTS or GT. Best option as others stated is to sit tight, or look for an SLI option if you want more performance at this point. Can't believe I'm actually recommending SLI, but at this point its really the only thing that's going to give you tangible performance increases if you already have a GT/GTS/GTX.

Some rumors say Q1 2008 and some rumors say Q2 2008. Probably will see it first half of 2008. My own personal opinion is that nVidia already has new gen high end cards ready to be produced and they are just waiting to see what ATI 3800 series does. For example if the 3800s dont do much market wise nVidia wont be in a hurry to trot out the next high end cards but if the 3800s sell well then I expect nVidia to speed up the release time on their GTX/Ultra killers to steal ATI's thunder. Either way I dont think trading a 8800GTS 640 for a GT is worth it. The next high end cards is going to reshape the 8800 playing field. Again this is just my own opinion.
