8800 GTS is equal to what today ?

Any help will be appreciated:

8800GTS is about two years old. Mine is overheating. Fan adjustments via
Rivatuner and Speedfan have increased stability for low-stress activities
but not for gaming.

I've considering a cooling upgrade but what about replacing the card with
something more current.

I love the performance the 8800 GTS still provides. Would a 9800GT or
a 260 be overkill ? I would like to keep things under 200.00. Thanks

A GTX 260 would be a pretty significant upgrade, 9800GT notsomuch (but still faster). What you have (8800 GTS 320 or 640MB?) is about equal to a 9600 GSO or 8800 GS (rough approximation).

well it would help if you actually said what 8800gts model you were talking about and listed the rest of your specs including res. you have been on the forums 8 years now so you should know how to do this by now. lol

Whats the rest of your system look like and what games do you play or plan on playing?

Heres a great deal for a 9800gt (faster then your card) with <free Call of Duty 4 and 5 for 109.00 after a 20 dollar rebate and free shipping. So 129.00$ + free shipping if you don't like rebates.

Heres a good deal for a 4850 ( as fast as a 9800gtx) for 140.00$ with free Stalker clear sky game.

Another good deal here for a 4870 ( as fast as a gtx 260) for 180.00$ free shipping.

Aaaah, sorry, forgot some details .. . i have the 320MB version, currently play COD4 with a
Quad6600 and Gigabyte P35. COD4 played extremely well on my current configuration. I
can't imagine how much the improvement will be, if any, with the choices mentioned above.

But despite what I didn't provide, the answers given are extremely helpful. Thanks so much.

On a side note, its humbling to see how much the P35 has dropped in price in the year-plus
since I purchased mine. Thanks again.

what res? at 1920 I would say a gtx260 or 4870 1gb would be really nice and would keep you happy for a while. at 1680 a 4850 or 9800gtx+ would suffice. also I would definitely oc that cpu to at least 3.0 to keep any of the really high end cards fed.

If you're satisfied with your current performance I wouldn't go above an HD 4830 or 9800 GT.

I agree with leyawin. If you were happy with 8800gts 320mb performance you would be happy with 8800gt that would be 20% faster or so if you are only into nvidia cards. 4830 is a bargain at $80 street price which usually outperforms the 8800gt. very good performance per $$.

A vote for the 4830. Not because i have it, but it beat my 8800GTS 320mb and my Radeon 3850 by a good margin. With my overclock 700/975 it just flat out flies. Make sure you get a Dual-Slot version. idk if they have single slot, but dont get it unless you want to CF as stock settings.

Careful. If you are really interested in comparing ATI and Nvidia drivers, you should start a new thread. Otherwise, the answer "pretty good" should suffice.

Both are pretty good. Its really a non-issue. I would stop that discussion here as tons of fan boys are going to flip.

You have several choices:

- HD 4830 for 90$+
- 9800GT for 110$+

- HD 4850 for 140$+
- 9800GTX for 145$+

- HD 4870 for 175$+ (512MB model)
- GTX260 for 205$+ (192 shaders model)

Those are around 200$ or less. Each two are in a "speed category" and are comparable in performance. The top one is the slowest, but is still around 20% faster than your 8800GTS 320MB. The middle one is around 10-15% faster than the first one. The lowest one is the fastest, having around 20% more performance than the middle one.

As for the drivers, both teams are good. You get your odd problem on both sides.

EDIT: Those are newegg prices from a few minutes ago.

Since you're satisfied with its performance while it works properly, why not simply try removing the stock TIM and replacing it with Arctic Silver or some other high quality thermal paste? And while the card is out of your case, take a can of compressed air and blow into the exhaust end to remove anything that could be blocking airflow. It's possible that either one (or both) are causing your overheating issues.

If it works, you've just saved yourself some $$$. If it doesn't work, you're not really out that much since you can use both items later on.

These guys didn't even ask the obvious question - who made your card?

If EVGA/XFX/BFG and you registered it you're good. Just RMA and let them fix/replace it (and maybe upgrade you if they don't have any in stock).

Now, if it's not under warranty, the best direct replacement from a performance standpoint would be a 9600GSO which can be had in the $50-60 range if you look carefully. But since you're getting a new card you might as well spend a little more and get something faster.

I picked up an EVGA 9800GTX+ two weeks ago for $120 after MIR and it's an amazing card. Noticeably faster than my previous 8800GTS (G92) which is considerably faster than the G80 8800GTS (which I've also had in the past).

thanks so much again. . . wasn't expecting so many replies.

current card ---> Foxconn. monitor - 28inch Hannspree 289.

i game at less than 19x12, usually around 14x9, but
i would love to stress the next card at higher rez.

i'm leaning towards either the 4870 512MB or the 260,
both at or below 200, with free shipping.

i thought about going the accelero route, re-applying the paste, etc. but i'm not
sure the problem is with the stock fan (which spins at 80-100%, temps idling at
55-60c) or something deeper. The call was between saving time or money, and
I opted for the later. There is always more coin to be had, but nobody has figured
out yet how to recover time lost waiting. Please don't answer with patience :p

well I would oc that cpu to around 3.0 if you havent already and get a 4870 1gb or gtx260. as long as you have enough system memory you shouldnt need to upgrade anything else for a long time with that setup.

An excellent idea. In fact - take it a step further (if you don't want to try RMA) and add a better aftermarket cooling system as well as thermal compound. Super-cooling and quiet....

But I think RMA is the best plan, if possible.
