8800 GTS 512 a letdown?

so everyone was waiting for the GTS 512 G92 thinking it would be worth waiting for and what-not. After reading the reviews it seems to me to be a bit of a let down and seems to justify the prices ppl have been paying for the GT 512...

From the AT article:

"Getting back to reality for a moment, what do we think about the 8800 GTS 512 as an overall buy? It's around 10 - 15% faster than the 8800 GT, with a 16% higher price tag (at least). Honestly, in our opinion, GTS 512 just isn't worth the price premium over the 8800 GT 512MB. There's significantly more shader processing power but with barely any more memory bandwidth, this isn't a card that's really any more suited for high resolution/AA performance than the 8800 GT.

It looks like our verdict still stands: if you want one of the best gaming cards on the market today, the 8800 GT 512MB is still our choice. It's more expensive than we'd like, but the 256MB version is a little too slow, and the GTS 512 isn't fast enough. The 8800 GT 512MB is just right."

Maybe now the 8800GT will be more available at a lower price after a bit. And if everyone takes AT's advice and buys the 8800GT the GTS MIGHT come down in price. I postponed my new computer untill this card came out. I'm still kind've tossing and turning on which to get, thankfully I'm still waiting on the new 780i chipset to come out. Hopefully by then the prices will have levelled out. Actually that's all noobishly optimistic, I don't see any of the $ signs changing untill after Christmas. *Sigh*, post-poned again.

EDIT: (Hit Enter to soo) Is it worth it? I thinks so actually. I hate it when they do: "It's 10-15% more performance for 18% of the price" reviews. The bottom line is it's a little more for..... a little more. And the 88GT512 is less for less. It's the newest thing going so there's a premium to pay for that "new GPU smell". There's a lot of people worried about how they JUST bought an 8800GT 512, and well, in my eyes you did the right thing. Stay put untill Febuary. To be honest I'm thinking of building my new rig around an 8600GTS and running on that untill Feb. Or just do the step ^ thing with Nvidia. Either way it's only a few more months.

i remember seeing in all of the "where to find an 8800GT" threads people writing about the prices are so high and "just wait when then GTS comes out the prices will drop and that will probably be a so much better card bla bla bla" -- just wait... so now we've waited... and guess what ppl are saying now. Just Wait! The 9800 will be out in Feb! lol

It's kind of a bummer because I did hope the prices for the GT would come down because of the GTS but based on what we've seen now that we've waited... it doesnt seem likely.

But you may be right.. i stopped tracking all those threads once i got my GT so maybe ppl did in fact stop anticipating the GTS... but then again the threads i've seen created here seem to indicate a certain level of "This-is-it-what-we've-been-waiting-for" anticipation was still out there...

Not true, many were waiting for this card expecting it to be a GTX/Ultra killer, which it really isn't.

And I'd have to agree, after looking through the FiringSquad review that the part is a disappointment for those that waited for the G92 GTS. I think the G92 is a great part overall, but its pretty clear there's very little difference between G92 GT and G92 GTS.

Firing Squad Review

When looking over this review, pay special attention to:

Leadtek GeForce 8800 GT Extreme (680MHz core/1.0GHz memory)

vs.

XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB XXX (678MHz core/986MHz memory)

Almost no difference at all in performance.......

I guess you don't read the boards too much in that a lot of people have been either planning to step-up to the GTS or skipped the GT for the GTS when it came out.

However, I'm with you in that I think people would prefer the 8800GT; it has fantastic performance for the money. The 8800GTS seems around $100-150 (+$130 for me, I got my 8800GT for $229) more for slightly higher clocks and a better stock cooler.

Seems like a waste, sorta like skipping on an 8800GTX for the 8800 Ultra: why?

I don't know what people were expecting, it beats the GTX which was it's mission in my opinion. Landing almost on par with the Ultra is pretty much all you can hope for considering the price is half..

talk about squeezing the last drop out of the 8800 series, Nvidia stop milking money out of gamers and release a card worthy of me spending my money, all i can say is ATI need to step up now because Nvidia are just taking the piss.
