8800 GT vs 8800 GTS fiasco

Ok... I bought a Dell outlet pc that came with a decent quadro card which I'm going to sell on ebay.

So, I need a video card. I play half life 2: orange box, and would like to play crysis.

I typically don't care about the 'waiting to order since something new is about to come out' but from what I understand a new nvidia product is coming out literally in about 4 days.

I decided to go ahead and get an 8800 and I'll just buy a second for cheap once prices come down from this 'new' card. The only issue is apparently:

8800 GTS (512mb) > 8800 GT > 8800 GTS (320mb/640mb)

(I think)..

This crap with nvidia's naming system (on top of the rumor that the 9800 is nothing but sli 8800 which should be an 8850 or 8950 NOT a 'new gen' card) has made me consider buying ati.. Which is saying a lot since I've been an absolute diehard nvidia (bfg tech) fan since the whole ATI 8500 driver fiasco.

So.... go ahead and get an 8800 GTS 512mb, wait and see what happens in a week, or buy an ATI card?

This is a fiasco?

I think you need to spend a little more time cuddling with that word.

Yep- that's a very good deal for that card. If I was looking for a card under $300, that would be the one. (or the GTS that's $269.99 AMIR)

If you're angry about NVIDIA's naming conventions, you could buy a ATi HD3870 for the same price as a 8800GT, but you'd be getting significantly less performance and with the only "real" advantage being a more heavy duty fan.

Edit: Even that isn't a total advantage as there are factory GTs with a Zalman fan stock.

Someone has the definition of fiasco messed up.

Anyways, if you want to buy ATI and get an inferior card, it's your choice, the fact is, nvidia has finally made the 8 series affordable and faster, I mean come on, you can get a 8800GT 512MB with a Zalman cooler for just $229 and it plays anything out there pretty well. nvidia is doing even more nice stuff with the mid-range by releasing the 8800GS and the 9600GT.

Maybe the cards are 1.5 years old but if they still play anything out there well I don't see what's the problem.

the GTS vs the GT in crysis means everything on medium quality except shader going up from medium in GT to high on GTS with the same framerate (~30 average FPS). (if I remember the hardOCP article correctly)
Without SLI thats the best you will get in crysis. (well, you COULD spent a ton on a GTX or ultra for a marginal performance gain..)

newegg suprisingly has the best deals on the GTS 512MB right now. I would recommend the XFX one because of the superior warranty (lifetime of customer AND lifetime of person who buys it from you used!)
be warned that the GTS 320MB and 640MB are of the older versions and they are both slower then the 8800GT 512MB.

Your Dell can use dual graphics cards?

the fiasco is the 8800WTF issue with the conflicting and confusing naming scheme, with so many completely different cards carrying the 8800 name.

And I don't see a single reference to that here... so I am wondering what this arcane fiasco is?

8800WTF isn't even a fiasco, because that's not what fiasco means, although I suppose an outlandish interpretation of the definition could lead to that thought.

More to the point, I really don't see how 8800WTF is that different from the status quo. Try explaining to people unfamiliar with PC Gaming that a 7900 is faster than an 8400?

That ticked me off too which was much more like a fiasco than 8800WTF but I do think they should have called the 512's 8900. I guess it's just a marketing ploy for the uninformed.

I say from now on nobody mentions the sacred word FIASCO unless you're fully familiar with it's meaning, else ja1484 might get offended. If you wanna use it refer to dictionary (and write it 200 times for homework)

fiasco1, fiasco2, fiasco3, fiasco4 ....

from dictionary.com:
fi·as·co /fi'æsko? or, esp. for 2, -'?sko?/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[fee-as-koh or, esp. for 2, -ah-skoh] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
?noun, plural -cos, -coes.
1. a complete and ignominious failure.
2. a round-bottomed glass flask for wine, esp. Chianti, fitted with a woven, protective raffia basket that also enables the bottle to stand upright.

So, would you have prefered I said "8800WTF is teh fail. lol!" instead of "the 8800WTF fiasco"? As far as I can tell they are synonymous.

imo its more appropriate to say the nV naming is a complete and ignominious failure rather than a fiasco ! :p

The 8800GT is better than older 8800GTSs so should be named as such like 8900GTS or something. Then the new 8800GTS should go with names like 8950GTS etc. but keep everything GTS so people will know it's not something to compete with GTXs.

OP. you have a point. but all you have to know is:

8800GTS 512 MB (G92 chip) currently best card for resos under 1900
8800GTX for everything OVER. GTX power comes in play at extreme high resolutions with AA an.

For users who dont have a high-end display running 1900x++ resolutions with antialiasing GTS is the best deal.

Make sure you get 512MB GTS w/ G92 chip.
