8800 GS Tested against 8800 GT

This 384MB 8800GS is the card we received today. We will receive 768MB version soon. All these cards we?ve seem is products by Palit. but later eVGA, XFX, and ASUS will also have 8800GS products.

The quick test shows the 8800GT leads about 27% comparing to 8800GS. But their price gap is about 50% in our local market.

The price of 384MB 8800GS and 768MB 8800GS is 1199CNY(165USD) and 1499CNY(204USD). Price is simular to HD 3850, so we can expect a mid-end VGA card war is incoming.

Wow..it holds up extremely well even under dx10. Thanks for the link, and like you said, I'm looking foward to seeing a midrange card battle if the price falls close to the 3850 in the USA.

Hopefully these actually see the light of day in the retail market and not just oem's. Would be a great card to compete against the 3850. I just wonder how long it will be before we actually see them?

I just upgraded my brother's computer and one of these would have worked out perfectly, but i couldn't wait forever so i went with the Visiontek 3850 bestbuy deal recently. It's plenty of horsepower for him and i was really impressed that it was almost as fast as my 8800GTS 320MB.

Alright, these performance numbers make more sense than what we were given before.

So now Nvidia is slotting the 8800GS 384/768 at the 3850 256/512, respectively, while the 8800GT 256 continues to slot against the 3870. Still, the price of the 8800GS 768 and 8800GT 256 are pretty close. Makes one wonder why they would buy the 768 when an 8800GT and 3870 are a few bucks more (assuming MSRP).

Now, is the 8800GS a different die, or is it just a castrated G92? If the latter, wouldn't the 8800GT 256 be cheaper to make simply because it has less RAM?

The REAL question these days is whether the new cards will be widely available at reasonable prices. :Disgust;

96 shaders and 12 ROP's on the GS, as opposed to 112 shaders and 16 ROP's on the GT. And don't forget the bus width. 192 bit vs. 256 bit.
