I'm a quiet PC buff and currently use a Gigabyte 7600 GT Silent Pipe II card (fanless). I'm thinking of upgrading to an 8800 GTS at some point. I've read somewhere that the cooling fans used on 8800 series cards are actually fairly quiet compared to a lot of other stock GPU coolers. I'm debating whether I should go for an 8800 GTS as is or wait to see what new fanless solutions might crop up (maybe a fanless 8600 GT or something).

Thoughts? How loud or quiet are the 8800 series cooling fans compared to older GPU coolers?

I just got my 8800GTX a few days ago and this thing is ultra quite, even with the fan set to 100% it is ULTRA quite. My last card was the ATI x1900xt and that was very loud, the 8800 series from my experience are quiter at 100% then my 1900xt was at the stock speeds.
If the entire 8800 line is as quite as my card then I would say go for it, they are really quite.
I hope this helps

It's subjectively louder than a 7900 GTX but the noise level is still very acceptable.

distinctly quieter than a 7800gtx 256mb...can't hear it over the case fan. 8800gts fan comes stock at 60%

I put mine in the water loop, but ran it stock for a couple days waiting for some heatsinks. Practically silent @ idle and only the sound of rushing air under load. Pretty nice cooler.

I'm a silencer myself, and I was very surprised. MY 8800GTS is certainly quieter than my Big Typhoon with the 120mm Yate Loon at full speed (~1200 rpm). I think it's about the same as a good 120mm fan at 1000 rpm.
