Currently got a Phenom 2 965 crunching SIMAP and a 5850 doing milkyway.. Do you guys think a 870 or 875 I7 would be worth the platform change over a 1055/1090T?

I don't know.
6 physical cores vs. 4 physical plus 4 virtual ... the i7 are pretty awesome but I am considering to get myself a Phenom II 1055 too ...
There is a difference in speed of course, but the Phenoms do OC quite well too as long as the cooling is sufficient.
If I had to change to mobo I would probably change to i7.
If the mobo is good enough for the CPU I would probably just upgrade the CPU.

Yeah, I haven't made my mind up if I am going to keep my Phenom 2 965 and just let my wife use it and as a 2nd cruncher.. I could maybe get 200-250 for it and the motherboard probably if I resold it, and then went with a 400-450 dollar I7 upgrade. I look at the SIMAP top machine rankings, and if you just pay attention to non opteron/xeon machines you see the 1090T and 1055Ts up at the top.

I know that markfw900 is pretty high on his folding ppd with his 1090t. I'm getting a 1055 rig pretty soon for my office, I don't crunch simap but I'll be able to at least give a clock/clock comparison vs the other rigs in my sig.

Yeah, I got a 790X chipset right now which should be ready for bulldozer.. I may just throw in a 1090T, and get another 5850 for CrossfireX. I will need a new power supply, and a bigger case probably. My maxtop signature series case was designed in a era where video cards didn't product as much heat as they are right now.. The airflow in it is great for cooling my CPU though.

I think you'll need a 800 series motherboard to use the new bulldozer. You'll still be limited with an AM3 mobo compared to the new AM3 +.

From what i have read, Bulldozer has to have a AM3+ board.

it will not work in a AM3 board.

Bulldozer is a new design, not just an upgrade.

Sucks if you just bought a AM3 tho.

Yes it does suck.. I'd rather AMD come out with a new platform if the performance gains are worth it.. What I am hearing now is that Older CPUs will be able to be used in the new AM3+ motherboards, but BullDozer chips will not work in the old AM3 boards.. I guess Thuban is as good as it gets for AM3 :'(

Intel's new chips also get a new socket: 1155 (one - 1- pin less than the current 1156). OTOH: those chips won't come out until next year or so ...
