868 intrusions/55high rated

I just installed the free version of zone alarm the other day(less then a week ago). Since then it says It has blocked 868 intrusion attempts, 55 of which were high rated. Is this normal? I mean I am sure some of these are just normal things, but that just seems like a lot. And if it caught all of those then how many were getting through before I installed it(I did have the firewalll built into XP running though). I mean norton says I have no viruses and I just ran adaware the other day which did catch about 60 things and deleted them. I'm just wondering what the heck all these intrusions are?

It could just be those damn messenger spams. When I have to connect via dial up, I would get one about 5 minutes depending on the city I was connected in.

Oh yeah I should have mentioned this is with dial up.
