hi 🙂

been looking at the local computer stores on the internet in canada and have noticed that the high end 865 boards come close to the high end 875 boards - maybe 40$ canadian difference.

i do see some cheap msi boards but thier high end 865 is high priced and not much less than thier 875 counterpart and very close to the abit 875 version with the gig lan.

anyone else notice this?

why would i not want to pay 40$(can) extra for a 875 over a 865?

Why not? Because spending that $40 more in a cpu upgrade will likely give you more of a performance boost than the PAT technology.

well like i said it is in canadian dollars and i dont plan on buying a new cpu for 6 months or so when i can afford both a 800fsb 3.x cpu and 2 sticks of atleast 400ddr.

basically though my question is why is the price so close when the 865 is supposed to be the lower end version?

They're the same chip. One just didn't pass the right speed tests to qualify for PAT and it's "bypass" features. That same chip also doesn't support ECC DDR. The price difference is just something intel sets. I think the cost difference is like $10 US. The motherboard manufacturers will, in turn, raise the prices of the "uber' model 875 because someone looking for that chipset is more willing to spend money on a computer.

If you don't care about the $40 difference, go ahead and spend it on the 875. I'm not sure there's any real world benefit to PAT (none of the reviews have convinced me yet) and I'd be hard pressed to convince you either is better if price is not an issue.

My choice was to pocket the difference and get my P4P800 deluxe.
