In the middle of playing starcraft 2 4v4, I experienced something super weird. I was getting around 1 FPS, which I thought was normal. My graphics settings were on lowest, and my specs aren't great. I have a 2 year old DELL M1530 Laptop, with a C2D T9400 2.53GHz, 3GB RAM, and a GF 8600M GT with 256MB GDDR3 RAM.
I can play 1v1s at around 30 FPS, which eventually drops to 10 in big fights. In the 4v4, I started with 20, and dropped down to 1 in a few minutes. And then SUDDENLY I'm up to 70FPS constantly, for about the last 30 minutes of the game.
My question is, how the hell can that happen? If it can run at 70FPS, why does it run so low? Mind you, I did not change absolutely anything. It just jumped to 70, after a few minutes of playing at 1 FPS. This was in a 4v4, and I never get constant FPS that high even in 1v1s.
I recently had problems with temperatures, and cleaned the laptop. I also replaced thermal paste. As temperature of the GPU would rise to 85 under load. Now it rises to around 75 after a long stress time. I also formatted my HDD recently.
I'm thinking maybe the card could be damaged, because the laptop shut down on me a few months ago when I was in a very hot room, and the fan was blocked.
I tried changing the drivers, but it works more or less the same on a few different ones.
Another thing I observed, was that in 1v1s, when FPS are around 30, there are sometimes moments when they will go up to 120, for a few seconds, but then drop down again. It looks almost like there is some huge bottleneck, which turns itself on and off once in a while.
Sorry for the long post, but I was trying to get all the info I have in here.
