I have both of these cards, but I'd love to sell the 8600 if the added spec doesn't help with video editing. I'm going to be running dual displays...1 22" and 1 19" with a max res of 1680.

Will i notice a different between the 2?

Thanks!

P.S.

My system is:

ASUS P5Q
E5200 @ 3.5GHz
4GB DDR2 800
3x Seagate 500GB 32MB

If the programs you use don't utilize GPU-acceleration, I don't think you'll see a difference at all.

from what i've read vegas 8 doesn't use the GPU so it doesn't matter what GPU you have in the system

Exactly. Video editing/encoding is processor dependent. Note that NVidia is pushing hard on CUDA, which uses the GPU as a specialized processor. Some video encoding apps are already using CUDA. If this spreads in the future, going with an NVidia card could be more useful.

As the 8600GTS is more powerful in games than the HD2400, the NVidia card might be the one to keep. You won't get much for a used HD2400. It would be more profitable to recycle it in a new basic build for a non-gamer.

Which video apps do use CUDA? I've been pondering Premiere Pro and was curious if my 8800GT would do any good for that program.

Also, I will be upgrading to an ATI 4870 very soon. Does ATI offer any kind of GPU offloading for specialized processing tasks?

...Sorry to hijack. :)

adobe applications that use the GPU do so using DirectX or OpenGL and not CUDA/Stream. Here's a list of supported GPU's for CS4
