8600gt driver problem

just got a samsung t220 and an xfx 8600gt xxx from newegg. When i tried to install the card, i'm forced into an 800x600 4 bit color mode. I've tried downloading new drivers for the monitor.

This is in an old Asus a8n5x with an amd athlon64 3200+

its been a while since i've messed with this kind of thing, so i'm not sure what to try next

ideas?

edit: should mention its replacing a evga 6800gs that worked fine. I've tried 175.19 and 175.16 driver packages from nvidia.com and xfxforce.com
