...in traffic accidents while driving their personal vehicles (25 USAF, 15 USN, 20 USMC, 26 USA [est. from monthly averages]). Figures are from the respective services' safety webpages.

Just pointing that statistic out for perspective.

Number of US troops killed in Iraq since 1 May? 60 (source: CNN).

So don't start feeling concerned until the number of troops killed in Iraq exceeds your other statistic?

No, it was only meant to put "death numbers" into perspective. It in NO WAY lessens the pain/sorrow of losing a person dedicated to serving their country. In fact - I think it calls much needed attention to those that do die while in service but aren't in a combat role at the time of their departure. Are combat soldiers more important than the others? No, but it makes for good "copy" 😉

Yeah, and in roughly the same time frame there've been 66 homicides in Washington D.C. - you tell me, which area is safer? 😕

It certainly serves to point out how many more military servicemembers would be alive if there was no war.

Actually, not necessarily. The Navy predicted at this point in the year they would have 15 more non-service related deaths than they do.
