How does the 855GM integrated graphics that comes with some Centrino notebooks compare with ATI Radeon 9000 mobile graphics? Is it possible to play good 3D games on a laptop with 1.5Ghz Intel M processor, 512mb of ram, and integrated 855GM graphics???

Pretty much any mobile Radeon will spank the 855GM - I've heard 3DMark 2001 scores of about 1500 quoted, compared to 6000 or so for a Radeon 9000. (Just as a rough indicator, that is, before the 3DMark police flame me)

The 855GM uses shared memory and I'm fairly sure it doesnt have hardware T&L, so it's only a DX7 part. It'll play older games well enough but for anything recent it's well worth paying the extra if a radeon is available.

Hmm, I recall the i845G extreme(ly sucky) graphics was a bit slower than a MX200, which would be half a MX400, ie a lower performance Geforce 2 part. Is the estimate close?

Here are the scores I have observed on various Pentium-M platforms for 3DMark2001SE

Radeon 9000 (128-bit, 64MB); ~6000
Radeon 9000 (64-bit, 32MB): 4800
Radeon 7500 (??-bit, 32MB): 4100

If the 855GM gets 1500, it won't be very good for 3D based games. My hacked Radeon LE gets about 2700.

If you thought the "extreeeme! dude!" label actually meant something, thiink again. This crippled graphics core is maybe half as good as a gf4 mx 420, you'll be lucky to have any 3D game playable even at 640x480.

You might look at 845G graphics this, 865G graphics are unchanged, still with only one rendering pipleline and no hardware T&L.
