I run an AX850, and I had a 7970 crossfire before, and I am now running 2 GTX780Ti cards in SLI with no issues with that power supply, with a lot of overclocking going on.
Reason I ask is I took out one 7970 and put in the 290x and I've already gotten several Windows 8 error screens that send the machine to a reboot. Maybe it's my mining settings? Will do some investigating, hopefully I won't have to buy and rewrite a new power supply...
edit: this noob <---- forgot to install new drivers lol. let's see if that helps!
This is weird. I only left the 290x in there, reinstalled drivers , still crashing when mining. Bf4 appears ok though so probably not power supply related? 850w should be plenty for a single 290x
850W is plenty for both the 7970 and 290x. Even if you were to push both cards to the limit, they are still only going to draw about 600W combined, which still leaves you with plenty of power for the CPU and rest of the components.
