850E confusion with 1066

I'm interesting in ordering an Intel produced 850E board, but its very confusing as to whether or not the board supports PC1066 RIMMs. Does anyone know for sure that it supports that memory speed?

Thanks in advance.

(the description on MWAVE says PC800 support, but Intel's webpage lists PC1066 under the 850E chipset)
 
I would wait a couple of weeks. In that case you could order a motherboard with the much anticipated Granite Bay Chipset.

Do you already have this 1066 RIMM memory? If so which cpu do you have? Did you by the computer from a place like dell or compaq?
 
I do not have anything yet. It is for my brother as an upgrade to his Celeron 400. We're going to go with a P4 2.53B processor and I believe I will pick up an Asus P4 PE based board with DDR support. The Intel produced 850E boards are nicely priced and the price of pc1066 ram is not too bad compared to cas 2.0 PC2700 DDR ram. I myself am running an older i850 board with PC800 and I have to say it is the most stable PC I've ever built - no crashes in a year (and it gets very heavy use). That is why I've been leaning towards and 850 solution for him, but it looks like 845 is the way to go.

As for waiting, it really doesn't matter. We all have to step in sometime. He's planning on keeping this pc around 2 years and price is a concern.
 
DDR SDRAM has a better longterm outlook than RDRAM. DDR SDRAM will certainly be better utilized in future upgrades. The price/performance of P4 2.4B is better than P4 2.53. If you so choose, you could easily get the 2.4B up to 2.8GHz using simple FSB overclocking - very good overclocking motherboard. But 2.4B is plenty fast at its' default speed on the other hand. In that case my recomendation would be to wait for Granite bay, but if you can't wait, then get this:

ALBATRON PX845PEV PRO motherboard $93 at newEgg
Intel Pentium4 2.4B Northwood processor Retail $193
Two OCZ DDR SDRAM 256MB Pc-3200 400Mhz CL-2 memory modules $96x2 = $192

You might also be able to get by with 256MB of DDR SDRAM memory depending on what you're going to do with the computer.

That is a very important thing for people who upgrade every few months. However it isn't at all helpful advice in this situation. He is going from a 400 MHz computer to a 2.5 GHz computer. That means this person likely will wait 4 years between now and his next upgrade - just like he waited 4 years for this upgrade. No matter what RAM he buys now it will be useless for future computers in 4 years. So no reason to consider it. This goes along the same lines as people saying RDRAM will go dead - so avoid it. Well EDO RAM went dead 5 years ago. And look it is still easilly purchased (check out pricewatch.com) at lower prices than ever before. Thus even if RDRAM goes dead, he will have plenty of memory available to upgrade this computer in the future.

Good points but I was just pointing out the advantages of DDR SDRAM over RDRAM in average case scenarios. Now you're taking the risk of confusing him. This is not the proper thread for this kind of post. Tripitz stay with my recommendation. Good day, all!

I would stay away from OCZ memory. Even regular Samsung PC2700 is better. Corsair is the best. GEIL and Kingmax are also better than OCZ.
 
On Intel's website it seems to say that only the i850EMVR board supports PC 1066 - the regular i850E's say they only support up to PC800. Is this incorrect?
I'm curious because I want to upgrade, but the EMVR board is hard to find, while the regular E is available at Fry's!....
