I know the GF4 TI4200 is faster than a Radeon 8500LE (250/250) but by *how much*? I may have missed out on the opportunity to buy one for really cheap, but I wonder just how big a difference there was?

Looking for some benchmarks now... the more recent, the better.

As it is, I'll probably be going fanless 9600NP anyways.... more money coming in = upgrades, baby! :D

There's not a huge difference, but it would be somewhat noticeable. I think the 8500 tends to catch up a little but when you have more details and higher res though. Btw, if you're planning on switching the 8500le for a 9600np I doubt it'd be worth it..You should get at least a 9600 pro IMO.

Hmm, I seem to remember that the 8500 was at about the same level as the GF3 Ti500.
So I would of thought the GF4 would leave it standing ,if memory serves anyway!;)

I know Anandtech has got some reviews of these cards with benchmarks ,their not new though.

The 8500 and Ti4200 are "pretty close" when both are at stock speed on a ~2 GHz CPU or below (like P4 2.0 or an XP 2100+). Once you get a faster CPU, the Ti4200 starts pulling away.

Also, if you overclock both cards, the Ti4200 *smokes* the 8500. You might be able to get an 8500 to 300/300 if you're lucky. You should be able to get the Ti4200 to between 275/550 and 300/600. At these speeds, there's about a 20-30% performance delta.

The one thing the 8500 can do better is Anisotropic Filtering. If you like AF then the 8500 is great (this equalizes both cards). With no AA/AF the Ti4200 is faster.

Yea, my card works at 300/600 with a case fan perfectly.

Glad to know I'm not missing out on anything by keeping the 8500LE just a little longer.

I'm getting my P4 3.x GHz monster setup very soon (Intel Retail Edge! No way would I normally pay for such a beast!) so this card will get me by until I can get a screamin' deal on a 9600 or better.

I was only thinking 9600 non-pro so I could get the fanless (SILENT!) version! Of course, ATI fans have been pretty quite most of the time... mind you, I did have one Retail 8500LE with a really noisy fan.... :frown: It went back to Future Shop PDQ! ;)

We'll see what the best price/performance is. A 9700/9800 non-pro on the cheap would be awesome! :D

The 9600np is total crap. It's considerably slower than an overclocked Ti4200. Stick with the Pro.

Whoa.... good point. It'd have to be REALLY cheap for me to even consider it then....

Well, I'm about to get a job as an in-house PC warranty repair contract guy for people like Dell and IBM, etc... maybe I can get my hands on a Radeon 9700/9800 "XT" like we saw a few months ago. ;)
Or at very least, I could afford something half-way decent! Once I get the job, that is...

FINALLY I BREAK INTO THE IT SECTOR!! WOOOOHOOO!!!! No more crappy sales jobs!!
:D :D :D :D :D

I acutally prefered the way my 8500LE ran to my Ti4200.. I swapped the 4200 for an 8500LE in my 2nd rig... runs great!

Perhaps then one of these would interest you? :) You can also get just the cooler, which will mount on any RADEON 9XXX and most NVIDIA GeForceFX cards.

On a P3 3Ghz, you really need something better than a 9600NP to get the most out of the rest of the system. :p

Well if folks are gonna' bump an old thread I might as well update.

Doesn't look like I got the job. What's worse is I lost the job I *did* have in trying to get it! :(

So it was budget-city for me. An AMD XP cheap-o and an nForce2 board with the onboard MX-440 IGP.
But I was able to trade in my old 8500LE and Audigy2 so I got it for very, very cheap.

It'll do for now.

And Intel won't ship their Retail Edge packages until January.... bastages! :frown:
With my first child being born sometime in the next couple weeks I have to get a new job FAST! Anything would be better than nothing at this point. :Q
