Hi,

I've been trying to optimize performance in Max Payne but I'm still getting wildly varying framerates. During sequences where there's not much going on, i.e. just running around, the FPS averages between 60-80 fps. However, in action sequences the rate drops to around 20-25, and in particularly heavy sequences (multiple enemies with lots of gunfire) it dips below 15fps and gets really choppy. I am using:

8500 64MB retail, 6071 drivers, o/c to 190/190
Athlon 1.4GHz
512MB DDR
WD 60GB 7200RPM HDD
Midiman Audiophile 2496
WinXP Home

Some other changes I made were applying the 1.05 game patch (it would crash without it), and turning particle effects to low (caused cinematic scenes to lag). FSAA and V-Sync are off, the game behaves similarly regardless of filtering type and to some extent resolution. In other words it's slow all-around. Any suggestions? Thx

The default core speed should be 275MHz. The memory 275MHz or 550MHz (DDR) depending on how your overclocker reads it.
