8500/8600 vs 6800

I have a Evga 6800 video card. Im wondering should i upgrade to something like an 8500 or 8600 and get rid og my 6800? I want to upgrade to Vista. I do play some games but im not a heavy gamer. More video encoding that anything. I want to make sure that the newer card are a step un and not down as far as performance even thought the memory interface on my current card is 256bit while the 8500/8600 are 128 bit

Is your 6800 a GT ? Ultra ? or the vanilla model ?

If you were going to go with a 8600 model, I would choose the 8600 GTS. As it is a bit faster than the GT counterpart.

What games do you play ?

My 6800 is the vanilla model. I just started playing Command & Conq., 3 Tiberium wars. Before that i would play Real War. Thats about it just alot of online flash games

Keep the 6800 until you really need to upgrade for improved performance. You don't need a new card just because you are moving to Vista.

I'm in a similar situation: my old machine is running an unlocked vanilla 6800, while the box I'm building right now will probably have an 8600 GTS.

Video encoding is done on your CPU, so no worries there.

The 6800GT is the slowest 6-series on Tom's VGA chart, and in most cases the 8600GTS has anywhere from a 70% to over 100% performance advantage. So against your 8-pipeline card, let's make a guestimation that the 8600GTS will always be at least twice as fast as what you currently have.

The slowest technically is the 6200LE.

The 6800GT has 16 pipelines. Maybe your talking about the 6600GT.

The 8600GTS will be better than the 6800, and it's Dx10 capable (though it doesn't sound like much of a factor to you).

The 6800GT has 16 pipelines. Maybe your talking about the 6600GT.

Official brainfart...12 pipelines. And I even have a 6800 (tho' it's AGP, so I unlocked the extra four pipes)

well the 8600gt is just barely faster than a 7600gt. and a 7600gt isi probably about as fast as a 6800 ultra. so yeah it'd probably just barely be faster. it would be a lot faster , maybe even 50-60% faster than 6800 non gt non ultra though.

im saying

8600gt is a little faster than a 6800gt or 6800 ultra.


but its a lot faster than a non gt or non ultra 6800 (the 6800 that is 12 pipes with 325 core 700 memory which is about the same as a 6600gt)
