When I used to go snowcatting (or "snowmobiling" for you lamens) I'd never go on a lake/river. Sure you can pick up some major speed, but I don't like being out on the ice like that.

The bigger ones can go well over 100+ mph. I've heard of some getting near 140, IIRC.

there were people going considerably faster than me,
anything over 85 was too much for me...started feeling like i was flying and just tapping each snow drift as i flew over

dumping that thing at those speeds would really suck

On the ice you'd have a nice long slide if you did. I got thrown off doing about 25mph in a field full of hard-packed snow one time...hurt like a bastard. I ended up doing sort of a front flip and landing on my neck/high on my back.

ya, they do... but then again, so do jetskis.
Dude, the world's fastest pwc only goes like 85.

Yeah, jetskis don't go as fast, but when you're skimming across the water it sure as hell feels like they do.

hmmph ... I was up in Sturgeon Bay this weekend ... The snomobiling was great.
I spent a great deal of time snomobiling over Green Bay, as well as a bit of time on the trails to and in Potawatomi state park. It was great fun.
My uncle took his GP440 up to South Dakota, so we were all on smaller 250cc snomobiles .. We still got up to around 60-70mph. (If I remember correctly the old Yamaha GP440 used to top off around 90mph.)

Happy Snomobiling!

well, maybe i am wrong... i assumed they did because i have pegged my in-laws at 80 mph and assumed that there are other models, and guys a lot dumber than me that would go much faster. Maybe the speedometer is off i dunno.... doing 80 on a jetski (or however fast it was) once was plenty for me. They lake was perfectly smooth, no other craft at all.... other wise i would never even think about going that fast, and i have never thought about going that fast again.
