845PE or Granite Bay?

Considering buying a new P4 Mobo. Want maximum stability and compatability.
Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,
Keys

NEITHER!!

Pick up a i865PE for around $105 (MSI) to $160 (fully loaded Abit).

Or get a i875P for around $160 and up.

I see no reason NOT to go with the latest generation. Besides full 800MHz/DDR400 support, you also get native Serial-ATA and support for Prescott processors.

Neither. Get an i865PE board, or if you want to spend more, get an i875P board.

He said he wanted maximum stability and compatibility. Are you two telling him that 865 and 875 offer him those two benefits at this point?

From all I've read, the 865 / 875 is damn near a minefield at the moment.

I'd have to agree that the 865/875 is not at the stability/maturity level that 845PE is. Look at all the posts of mem compatability issues, odd overclocking issues, etc.

A few points:

1) Are you going to overclock? If not, the 865/875 look very good. If you dont, I would say get the Intel D875PBZ 875P based board if you are looking right away.
2) If you are going to overclock a 533 MHz FSB CPU, Id say either the Abit IC7 or Aopen AX4C right now. That may change
3) If you can wait a month or so, the 865PE boards should all hit the market. You will then have more choices
4) The 845PE boards really are great. Stable as I have eber seen, and a bargain. Two that stand out are the Albatron PX845PEV Pro and the Abit BH7. I look at things from an overclockers perspective, but they are good boards even if you dont.

Yeah, if you need stability now get an 845PE. I'm sure the 876/865 will be whipped into shape but how long it will take is unknown right now. A BH7 can hang pretty close with the 875/865 in performance too.

I agree with you. Actually he should maybe consider a sis 655 BO board as well. But the 865/875 really are off to a rocky start.

I was just browsing over at A Open's site and checking out the A Open AXP4E Max and according to the site with the latest Bios the AXP4E Max will let you run a P4C at 800 FSB AXP4E Max Text

Haven't tried it just thought I'd pass on the info. YMMV.
