845E mobo benchmarks using DDR333

On Anandtech's article "Intel 845E Motherboard Roundup - August 2002" it provides 845E mobo benchmarks using DDR333. Of the Intel chipsets, I thought only the 845G mobos support DDR333. The Anandtech article provides no background on this - just presents the "Test". What gives?

In the article, it's the page titled "The Test" which indicates that DDR333 was used. It's confusing given all the other news highlighting that the 845E mobos don't support DDR333.

Thanks for checking into this - a quick followup posting clarifying the situation would be much appreciated.

None of the 845E boards used DDR333. None of the 845E boards had BIOS options that allowed DDR333 operation.

I wasn't able to get in any overclocking tests, but I will be able to in my 845G roundup. 🙂

In other words, are you saying that you used DDR266 for the 845E mobo benchmarks? Do you intend to amend the article which currently indicates that 'DDR333' memory was used?

Assuming DDR266 was used on the 845E mobos, the benchmark results are impressively close to the 648 mobo results (where the 648 mobo was using DDR333 and DDR400). I'm surprised that the 845E using slower memory could keep so close!

cheers

Linky. Near as I can tell, he makes no mention of the any i845E mobo running at DDR333. I think you may be confused by the inclusion of the SiS 648 ref board running at DDR333 and DDR400.

Btw, Evan Lieb, how soon can we expect the i845G roundup? 😀

Well, since I just got the boards last Friday and am waiting on more...in 2 weeks, but I'll be posting a few individual motherboard reviews (648, KT400, etc.) in between those 2 weeks too. 🙂

Sweet, that may be just in time to help me finalize my mobo decision (I'm strongly leaning towards the EPoX 4G4A, but the Abit BG7 keeps nagging at me), keep up the good work. 😎

Yeah, me too. The 4G4A+ has produced some excellent results but the gigabyte 845G solution also looks excellent.

CrazySaint: You haven't bothered to read "The Test" page which clearly indicates the memory used is DDR333 (which we know was not the case for the 845E mobos). Unfortunately, readers who are not in the know will unnecessarily think that DDR333 can be used on such boards - hence my recommendation that the article be amended ASAP.

cheers

Actually, I rarely pay much attention to the "The Test" pages. But I'm sure they did, in fact, use DDR333 RAM (so they could test the SiS chipset, I'm sure), but they clearly ran it at PC2100.

Yes, as Crazy has mentioned, they ran it at PC2100. I think you were assuming it was operating at DDR333? The 845E is capable of using DDR333, however it doesn?t mean it has to be operate at that speed to work. Basically, it?s backwards compatible.
