8440GS video card - did Linus get snookered?

Builds an FM1 rig, and then throws in this video card.

Now, I've heard of a 440MX, GF440, and 8400GS, but not an 8440GS.

I think that this is a "Chinese fake" video card, some older chipset, dolled up with fake hacked drivers, to be something that it really isn't.

Which, given the description of the card and its abilities in the video, fits.

Funny how Linus doesn't mention it's a fake card, although the gaming performance increased, once they removed the card, and just went with the FM1 APU. (Which, I don't understand, if they were using an APU, why they even bought a card to stick in it anyways, at least one that no-one's heard of.)

Edit: Hmm, appears to be an HP-specific model.

Yes its an oem card. Yes also its stupid to even use a card that bad to intentionally hamper the performance when he knows that the igpu is much faster.
Pretty sure he could have got a used 730 gddr5 for less than $30 and it would be twice as fast as A8-3870 igpu.
But he only wanted to build the cheapest rig with only new parts.
If he wanted to build a completely new cheap build, an A8-9600 for $70, A320 board for $50, 4gb ddr4 for $30 and the rest of the components like a 500gb hdd, psu, case could be built for around $250. This build also has future upgrade path, gives decent performance for the money as well is cheap. Win Win.

Well, I just built:

AMD A8-9600 $71
Asus Prime B350M-E $60
16GB DDR4-2133 kit $110
Seagate FireCuda 2.5" 1TB $55
Asus DVD-RW SATA $15 (maybe $13?)
Rosewill FBM-05 mATX case $25
EVGA 600W ATX PSU $33

total: $367

Ok, so not so totally cheap, but ... you can drop in a Ryzen APU in the future, or add a GPU. The 16GB DDR4 RAM was one of the most expensive parts, I guess.

Could you do some benchmarks as to what kind of performance can be expected with an A8-9600 in demanding games. Don't test csgo, dota, lol, etc because they run on 10 year old gpu as well. Also how much can you overclock the cpu on the stock cooler?

The only AAA game I own is Skyrim (vanilla). Which is fairly old, these days. I think that you can play it on Ultra on a GT1030, maybe. I know I could play it on 1080P Low on my i3-6100's iGPU, amazingly enough, and it wasn't bad. It was playable. So, should probably be playable on my A8-9600. Give me some time, maybe I can get that tested.

never heard of 8440GS before, but it looks like a very standard 8400GS G86, it was competing with the HD2400 (40SPs VLIW5), so yes, probably beats the 780G (40SPs, but with memory speed bottlenecked by hyper transport), but any APU is much faster....

Guys, its LinusTechTips. It usually won't make sense. It'll look hip or cool though.

Watching him with that whole room water cooling setup a few years ago, just putting noctua fans on a radiator that would be outside on the roof makes me laugh every time.

The guy is a tool. There is no respectable tech afficinado that watches that nonsense he puts on youtube.
