8400GS vs G210 for oldish HTPC

Hello,

I've recently realised i have an entire computer laying around in bits and pieces, and figured i might as well build something. All i need is a GFX.
I've decided to build an HTPC based on some Linux flavor with XBMC installed.
It's relatively weak HW, single core A64 and so on, and i need something that can accelerate vide playback. I guess i can get smooth HD playback on most files with this, since ION netbooks can.
Anyway, I figured out i wanted the 8400GS, as they are quite cheap and supposedly do quite well. Also, they are mostly passively cooled.
Then found out the G210 is almost as cheap (but the cheapest model is actively cooled), and supports a wider range of acceleration features, as far as i can see.
I can also see that Anandtech found some issues with deinterlacing, but i won't be playing much interlaced content anyway.
Will I, in my case, get any tangible performance benefits from the 210 rather than the 8400?

Edit: I found that my local store has the 8400 with 256 mb memory for even less than i could find the 512mb version for online. Am i likely to get worse results from playing back video with a smaller frame buffer?

I think you should determine what type of video playback you will be doing, and then research to see if the 8400 can do it.

The 8400 won't pass audio unless the card has a SPDIF connector built into it and your motherboard/sound card has SPDIF out connectors.

Alright. If i understand everything correctly, the 8400 should be enough. Then again, my other hardware may be too crappy.
I can't find out for sure if it has SPDIF, so it probably doesn't. Means I'll have to swap a cable each time i want sound. If only everything was easy :)
Thanks for the help anyway.

I have a G210 and it can pass audio and video through the HDMI port in Windows. If you're trying to run XBMC Live, the video works and you get full acceleration but the sound is a complete pain in the ass to get working that it's easier to just use the 1/8" line out although you're limited to 2-channel stereo sound. If you have an SPDIF output on your mobo or sound card then you can get 5.1 sound.

The 210 GT is much better. Not only do you get Divx upscaling, but you also get real HDMI audio support.

And whoever told you 256mb of RAM is enough is lying to you. I have had that amount choke on some Blu Ray rips of mine before.
