So I have a friend moving into my city and he is staying with me for a bit. We tried to hook up his LG LCD (LH50) series to my computer but things looked a bit funky in two ways.

My card is an GeForce 8400 GS with the most up to date (huge) driver from nVidia. I have a normal monitor connected via dvi and the tv only has hdmi, vga or component. With my regular monitor connected, when I connected the TV via VGA, it would detect normally and even though the resolution would default to 1920 x 1080 on the second display, it would not take up the whole screen.

More frustrating however, were the colors. Red = black and the other colors looked weird as well. I went through color management both through windows and the nvidia control panel but got no results.

I don't think it is the cable because I use it with another hdtv to connect a laptop all the time.

Is it because I have a dvi cable connecting the monitor at the same time? Or maybe just a VGA thing? Maybe I should look into buying a dvi-hdmi adaptor and then try and use my regular monitor through vga?

OS: Win 7 64bit

I'd be interested in knowing if someone else has had a similar experience and how they resolved it.

yea just get a dvi-hdmi adaptor or cable, some places have really cheap HDMI-DVI cables but other places the adapters are cheaper, so depending on where you are and whats available, shop around and find yourself the best deal. those things tend to have really huge profit margins when sold at MSRP (50% minimum, i have seen some with 300%), but other places mark them down to make up for it on volume, providing you with an extremely good value. for example frys used to have these shaxon 10' HDMI 1.3 cables that we would put on sale for $3 from time to time. we still have em for $8 but they havent been on sale in a long time. deals like that

Thanks, found a nice deal on an adapter + cable, even cheaper than my local Fry's. Didn't know we had an employee on the forums though, great insight.

So, got the adapter and hdmi cable.

Since I don't have a vga right now, I couldn't connect both so only did the TV.

Colors looked fine BUT even though the resolution defaulted to 1920 x 1080, the text was not clear and I could not see half the task bar (the edges of the screen).

First, I am not sure if it is better to tune these settings through windows or the nvidia control panel.

In the nvidia control panel, it was detected as an hdtv and resolution set at 1920 x 1080, 1080p. However, there were separate resolutions that were I guess monitor resolutions instead of TV. Changing it to one of those like 1600x1200 (which I realize is 4x3) made everything much clearer and I could also see my full desktop.

Was the blurriness because it wasn't a 1x1 pixel ratio? 1920x1080 is native for the lcd so im unsure what is going on.

Also, its a 120hz lcd but the most I could choose was 60hz refresh rate.

I'm googling away for this specific tv and vid card but not really getting anywhere.

advice?
