Hi

I just bought a 840 pro and as I was expecting on my sata 2 board (P55 FTW), the speeds are not even close to 500mbs, but I was expecting much more on the 4K tests

Shouldn't I get a little more on 4K? If its my board problem as I think it really is, anyone could help me choosing a cheap but decent pcie sata 3 controller to use my new drive at max speeds? Or maybe I shouldn't buy anything and wait to change the entire systen in summer with haswell?

Thanks!

no such thing as "cheap but decent" when it comes to getting max performance from an SSD with a card. Especially considering that all the spec's are generated from the native Intel chipset.

As for getting better performance from your current hardware?

disable all c-states in bios
disable speedstep in bios
overclock the ram and CPU
Set power options to high performance
tweak windows to have less overhead and avoid background services at time of benchmarking

you could also.. secure erase the drive and test it as spare like the mfgrs do to get max speeds possible.

PS. I would just upgrade the system and keep that cash in your pocket for now. The advantage gained from the newer systems will be much more widespread than just worrying about gaining higher benchmark numbers on a sata2 based system. Just because the OS volume benches twice as fast on the newer systems.. doesn't even come close to meaning that the system will feel twice as fast. Because once you have a decent SSD running the show.. the law of diminishing returns sets in very quickly.
