8300gs or x1300

Both are $50 at dell, and I'll be running XP for the forseeable future. This machine will really just be used for browsing and random office-type stuff.

Any opinions on which I should choose?

Edit: I totally fubar'd the ATI model: it's an x1300 128MB, not the 1300xt.

The 1300XT is much faster in games. The 8300GS is not an "official" NVidia card, but the 8400GS is (look on NVidia web site and Newegg). I suspect the 8300GS is an OEM unknown entity.

No 8300GS

However, you can find the 8300GS if you do a web search. It has Turbocache, meaning it eats up part of your system memory for graphics, something better avoided.

I would tend to choose the 1300XT if you can confirm it doesn't have Hypermemory, the ATI equivalent of Turbocache. Most of the 1300XT's don't.

If both alternatives have Turbocache/Hypermemory, then I would tend to go with the NVIdia 8300GS because it has a more recent archtecture and NVidia drivers are more versatile regarding scaling at lower resolutions or scaling while maintaining correct aspect ratio. This is more important if you have a widescreen monitor.

I think the 8300GS uses its own memory.
