Wow, WTF would someone not just buy a $10 phone from Wal-Mart?

Because when she started renting it (42 years ago) neither $10 phones nor Wal-Mart existed.

I still remember my parents having to return a phone to the phone company and I'm only 24.

Viper GTS

I convinced my parents to stop leasing their rotary phones only about 5 years ago

no suprise. you used to have to get phones from the phone company. you did not have a choice. my grandmother had one for years until we baught her one (rotery style).

though the phone company should have offered to just give them the phone after a while. but yeah i know they are inbusiness to make money. i cant blame them really.

Probably nobody noticed, or more specifically, the only person who noticed was some low level data entry guy who would have gotten nothing more than a wield look from his boss for asking about it.

"I'd like to have my rotary back," she said. "I like that better."
And there's the key point, I don't think paying for it bothered her, only her grandkids.

That works out to $27/mo. How many people spend 10x that amount per month to play the latest video game?

If she was find doing it, then I don't see the reason it's news.

Who the hell pays $270/month for a video game? I generally buy it for $49.99 and call it good.

Isn't this the same demographic who sends thousands of dollars over seas so they can claim their prize?

In my opinion, it is a little predatory. However, I don't blame the phone companies for providing the service and then not calling people and telling them "Hey...you can buy a phone for $10."

Software and hardware, internet, game systems, etc.

And I still lease my cable modem. Though I've had 3-4 die and need to be replaced.

I don't care what she uses it on, it doesn't mean I can't call her an idiot when she wastes it like a moron.

Ps - the $$$ you spend on cell phones is for the service, you own the phone.

Ahhh...so now people pay $270/month for a highly sophisticated system so they can play games. Sorry, it is not a fair comparison. Most people can get a decent gaming computer from Dell for $1500 and won't have to upgrade for 2 years (albeit games then would need to run on medium or low settings.)

A more accurate comparison would be like a company leasing someone an ethernet cable to go with their cable modem for $15/month.

What is funny is that $1500 over two years is more than double $14,000/42 years. ;)

Are you interested in leasing a phone? Sounds like we found a niche market...

750,000 still lease phones! I could lease them a phone for $5/month and be RICH!

Sure...put we are talking about a phone vs. a highly sophisticated piece of engineering with decades of development and technology that can be used to look at p0rn.

Its not really that big of a deal. So she paid an un-necessary $27 a month extra for her phone. Many people pay huge phone bills and think nothing of it. I pay $40 a month for my cell phone. Lets say I have it for 42 years. Are my grandkids going to freak out because I paid $20,000 over 42 years just to have my cell phone?

We had one of those rental phone from AT&T back in the days. Those phones were built like tanks, no matter how many we dropped it it woud still work.

My parents were still renting a rotary phone until they moved to their new house...just last year. I loved it growing up.

A lot of people lease their cable modems.....

where can you find a $10 cable modem?

Where could you find a $10 phone 42 years ago?

What the fvck does that have to do with paying $30 a month to lease an outdated piece of equipment TODAY?

Sometimes the lack of logical ability some of you people display just astounds me.
