80MM on CPU for Cooling

That's an interesting question. I guess it depends on how big the heatsink is. For the amd64, the heatsink is fairly large so I think the 80mm would be better.

Now if the heatsink were fairly small, the larger dead space in the middle of the fan may not actually make the cooling better. Anyone else have input?

I tried to put 80mm on the heat sink and it fits like it is made for it. but when i check the air flow of stock fan it looks just as good as 80mm. I think i should try it for a while.

All fans are different. If you need more cfm, then buy an 80mm fan with more cfm than your stock fan.

Fans are fans, they aren't made specifically for CPU or Case cooling. Just get a good (non generic) one with the performance you want and go with it.

Any body know any good fan with good price

I use lots of Sunons they'r good. But if your looking for low noise/silent cooling Panaflow is the %*&@.

I use a 92mm stealth fan to go on top of my slk-900a. So yes, you can apply an 80mm fan if your hs supports it.

I know this is a stupid question, but ive never used any CPU fan other than stock.

Which pin connection do you need to use a fan as cpu fan? 2/3 or 4?

Thinking of using Panaflo 120mm M1A Fan 86cfm 35dB(A) - Fluid Bearing, with the Thermalright XP-120
Good or bad decision?
Im not planning on OC from the off, but will be at some point down the line, so im A) makin sure i hav the cooling there ready, and B) I can benefit from the cooling in the mean time?

I'm thinking you'll need the 3 pin connector cuz that's what connector a mobo has. Generally, your mobo needs to monitor the cpu fan or overheat protection will kick in and she'll shut down.

Ok so this fan should fit no probs, so long as i get the 2/3 connector? Nice. thanks. 🙂

Not sure what brand of motherboard you are using, but some will have trouble if you try to power more than a 3 watt fan. The Panaflo M1A 120mm is a 4 watt fan.

Might want to double check if your board can run it, or just power it with a 4-pin molex. (You would have to disable "halt on CPU/fan fail" in your bios)

I had one situation where I couldn't figure out why my PC wouldn't boot and it turned out to be the Thermaltake fan I had plugged into the fan header was pulling to much current. (8.4W)

Ah right, thanks for that input xbass.

Currently theres no Mobo, im in the process of making up the list of parts for a new system, and wanted to make sure this would be ok to do (panflo in xp-120), as thats the HS im going to go with more than likely.

I'll be posting up complete system specs, once a good 939 MB is released in the comming weeks for you guys here at AnandTech to look over anyway, as ive always found (trolls excluded) all of you guys to be incredibly helpful and very open with your knowledge.
So hopefully if i do make a mistake somewhere down the line, it will be spotted 🙂...

Thanks again mate.

Is that True?
