80gb ssd is starting to fill up, what to do?

I bought an 80gb intel SSD about 6 or 7 months ago when I built my current rig. Right after an win7 install I had about 60gb left and all was well. The months gone by and I just looked at the free space and I’m down to about 25gb. I was thinking maybe I can buy another non-intel ssd as they’re getting cheaper these days and move all my program file there. I did that to my “my document” folder a while back. I followed instruction online to get win7 into restore mode, xcopied the files, made a link somehow, and now “my document” points to a folder in my storage drive. I’ll have to find those instructions again but I’m wondering if anybody has done something similar to the program files or have any other ways to go about this.

I do this on all my desktop computers (work, home). I move Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and Videos to my storage drive. I originally started doing this to make reinstalls easier. Just wipe the C drive, and remap to the existing locations on the D drive once Windows is back up... viola all my stuff is just there.

It's a lot easier than the method you're saying you followed. Open Windows Explorer, go to your Desktop, double-click your profile, and from there you right-click each folder in turn and go to the Location tab. Pick a new location and it'll move your stuff for you.

If you're still running out of space, buying a new drive just for your Program Files doesn't seem like the best route to go. You can't easily move Program Files. Seems better to buy a new system drive, clone your's over, and then wipe and sell your 80GB drive used.
 
I have an X25-V boot drive with a 100GB C:Games folder which is actually an independent RAID partition. You could do something similar, assuming Windows 7 x64:

  • Plug in the new SSD and boot as normal
  • Close as much as you can (this could be tricky for stuff like Winzip which has shell DLLs open at all times - may have to uninstall a few things)
  • Rename "C😛rogram Files (x86)" to "C😛ftemp"
  • Right click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management
  • Right click the new SSD, partition + format as needed
  • Right click relevant partition > Change drive letter and paths > Add
  • Mount in the following empty NTFS folder > Browse
  • Expand C: then click New Folder and name it "Program Files (x86)" > OK > OK > OK
  • Open My Computer > [tap ALT if menu hidden] > Tools > Folder Options > View > Show Hidden Files > OK
  • Open C😛ftemp > select all > cut
  • Open C😛rogram Files (x86) > Paste

Bar the programs that have shell integration, everything else will work without needing reinstallation.

Also to note, assuming 64bit again, you'll have "Program Files" for native x64 applications - but I'm guessing this would be really small so could stay on the Intel.
 
I bet if you turned off system restores for C drive(and got rid of previous copies), turned off hibernation (which removes the hibernation file as well), and adjusted your pagefile to something smaller then I think you would save more space.

It might be even easier than that. I recall in a recent build with an SSD boot drive and secondary HDD that all I had to do was to move the folders using Windows Explorer, and Windows 7 auto-magically updated the links.

Don't know if this would work for Program Files, but it did for Libraries.

Maximus96, have you tried running Disk Cleanup?
