I have an 80GB SATA HD. I just moved it from my intel build to my old SKT A build. It's already got 2 hard drives that are both IDE on there. The mobo is like NF2 or NF3 chipset, but it has SATA ports. So I plugged it in, and when I am in windows xp it doesn't recognize it. Is there anything I can do? Why won't it recognize the drive?

Most variants of nF2 chipsets did not have native SATA capability. What exact brand and model of motherboard is it?

It's a biostar m7ncd Ultra. It listts support for SATA on their site.

Is the drive brand new? you will have to initialize and format it in Disk Management if it is.

You may also need drivers for the SATA controller..

Go into your BIOS and make sure the SATA ports are enabled. By default they usually are not. Some older boards will not enable SATA ports w/o RAID. A single drive has to be used as RAID 0 in such cases. (I have one like that.)

The drive is old, but it was just working.
I went into the bios and enabled SATA. How do I set it to raid?

Ugh, it has a VIA SATA RAID controller. Well, they've got the drivers on this page for it, but from past struggles with VIA SATA controllers, I wouldn't be too optomistic about this. Either get a SATA controller card which can operate in non-RAID mode, or use Parallel ATA drives.

Let's check to find out if OS can "see" your HDD:
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Computer Management
Storage
Disk Management (Local)

In the bottom panel of that window, do you see the PHYSICAL drive??

You need to enable the SATA ports in Bios.
Install the SATA drivers that came with the mobo (CD Driver)
and then initialize it under Disk Management. Make sure it is initialized as a Basic Disk and NOT A DYNAMIC DISK.

@ MegaVovan: The computer does not see my HD.
@ mechBgon: I was only going to use it for about a week. I have music on there, and I wanted to make CD's so I put it on this computer. The other computer only has 2 SATA ports, and the CD/DVD drive is SATA, so I couldn't have this drive and that on at the same time. I will try the CD for SATA drivers, and if that doesn't work I will try your link. But if it doesn't work, no big deal, I'll put it back on my computer at school where it was originally.
@Jiggz: I did enable SATA in the bios. I will try installing the drivers from the disk, and then initializing it and get back to you.
thank you everyone for your help. Hopefully it will work soon.

thank you everyone. All I had to do was install the drivers for it, and it works. I just thought I had already done that, but apparently not. Thank you again.
