80GB PS3 going bye bye as well?

The PS3 pricing structure is like a really wily monkey. You may think you have him, you've got your stun club and net all ready and then ... poof! He loses you, leaving behind only a monkey-shaped cloud of dust. In what appears to be its latest juke, the 80 GB version of the PS3 will apparently go closeout (read: no new shipments) at Best Buy stores, according to an internal memo sent to PS3 Fanboy.

What does this mean for the PS3 exactly? We've checked with our team of experts and are now able to report that we have absolutely no clue. It's worth noting that in Japan, the 20 and 60 GB SKUs of the system were dropped to focus all efforts on the 40GB model, but we don't know if that's what's happening here. The only facts now seem to be that something is up, and Sony's saying it's business as usual. We'll let you know when we hear more.

Looks like Sony is going to concentrate solely on the cheapest model to produce/sell to save money on production and to get more buyers.

Wow, no more BC period? Wasn't there a job posting for BC expert for Sony? Maybe they will release software emulation to the 40GB through a PSN update.

Could it also possibly be a new bundle pack with a different game? That usually forces a new SKU*.

EDIT:

*Note: ...or at least I think it does.

My guesses about that job posting was that either they are working on an all-software BC solution for the PS3, or they are just getting a head start on an all-software BC solution for the PS4 to play PS3 games.

I don't know... if you believe Sony, they discontinued the 20 GB because no one ever wanted it. So you'd think the same would be true of the 40 GB, which is more gimped than the 20 GB. I don't think it's a big deal for Sony to make two consoles, but it is a big deal for the retailers who are stocking and taking up shelf space for two separate models of a very expensive, poor performing console in a big box. So I wonder if this is just Best Buy, although the memo does hint that it's Sony.

I have to think that if they're discontinuing the 80 GB it'll be replaced with something else, probably a bigger hard drive. Who knows if it'll have PS2 compatibility though.

I was under the impression the 40GB PS3 was capable of doing BC, it is just not currently enabled in the firmware.

My guess would be that Sony would like to sell PS2 titles as downloadable content, much like Xbox is doing with their originals, so they are killing off disc backwards compatibility and forcing a per-game download for older titles.

Oooo, that's not good. If it's true, I might pick up an 80GB unit. I already have a 60GB PS3, but I could use another one in the bedroom. 🙂

That's exactly what I was thinking... if the 40 GB is cooler/quieter, wouldn't they do the same with the 80 GB?

I'd like to see the full BC PS3 back... what was that one, the 60gb? I've got 2 $100 dance mats for DDR that I'm not going to let goto waste.

That wouldn't require them to put out a new SKU. The 360's SKU stayed exactly the same when it had a die shrink.

There doesn't seem to be any reason to drop it the 80gb SKU sales-wise, either. Maybe a new bundle, something like that? There was apparently a R&C + Uncharted bundle in Europe released recently, albeit for the 40gb model. I guess it they might put that into the 80gb model here - it would certainly be more appealing than Motorstorm.

I agree with modeps, though - I'd really like to see full hardware BC return to the PS3. If I buy a PS3 in the future, I'm still going to go with a 20gb or 60gb model.

My guess is that sales have shown that the cheaper 40 GB model is selling better. Regardless of the uproar by the fanboys in the internet, I really don't think that BC is a huge selling point. It's a nice bonus that in reality most people don't use or use enough to be that big of a deal if it's gone.

It's either that or they are going to clear out the current 80 GB to make way for the new models packed with the DS3.

If they dropped motorstorm the sku should changed. Doesn't make sense for them to keep producing 90nm cell bundles when they can use 65nm chips and save.

If they came out with a 65nm with full bc I'd probably buy it even though I already have a 60 gig (damn thing can get loud).

You guys have to remember that 80GB version is a bundle, not just the console itself. Most likely, the game is going to left out and lead to lower price, or a new game bundle with another game, or both.

Yeah, as of right now, I'd only be buying a PS3 for the blu ray player and a small handful of single player games... and I would hope, to replace my PS2. Yes, I know "no once cares about BC" and I agree to an extent, except with games like DDR, GH, IIDX, et al, where you spend a bunch of scratch on good accessories and hope to use them for some time.

To my knowledge, you can't use PS2 dance mats, guitars, etc with the PS3... even with a USB->PS2 adapter.

When I bought my parents a 40GB PS3, the lady actually commented to me that it can't play PS2 games and that a lot of people had purchased one and subsequently returned it because they didn't know. Is it possible that if the 40GB model is selling more that BC could be "ignored" because they're ignorant and think the 40GB model also has it?

There's supposed to be a good adapter (from Radio Shack, IIRC) that works well enough with the guitars, but I don't remember the specifics.

Looks like I still don't know everything about the PS3. That's just crappy if they dont work. I guess I just assumed that it would be like the PS2 vs PS1... you could use the PS1 controllers on the PS2, even though the PS2 controllers were superior. Basically, I guess that's another reason for me to not buy the PS3. 🙁

Don't really know what to think about this if it's true. Aside from BC, the HDD size is a joke since Sony openly tells you it is interchangable and upgradable, and the extra ports are pretty meh (you probably have mem-card adapters for USB anyways. This would probably save everyone, including manufacturers and retailers, a lot of money by making one SKU/model.

my prediction in the next steps that will be taken:

-80gb is dropped.
-Sony intros white 40gb PS3 (might not be as gimped. not sure if the specs were released from the FCC). It'll cost $299, and be out between now and the end of spring.
-Sony intros 160 or 250gb pimped version. It'll be black. Probably cost between $399 and $499.

I think the 40gb white PS3 @ 299 is a very smart maneuver and Sony would be plain dumb to NOT do it. If the PS3 is 299, and the Wii is still 249, and the 360 Arcade is 279, then well, that's the PS3, in white, joining the other white consoles in the magic 200-300 selling point. That means a lot, because I bet there is a mentality where when the console is white, it's a good item to buy. White is what a lot of people want these days, in everything. Too much white everywhere if you ask me, but whatever. I prefer a black console to a white one personally, it blends better with pretty much every other thing I buy because most of my electronics are black.
Personally, I think the 80gb might be dropping in production numbers because they are instead focusing on mass producing the 40gb white console, because they are going to intro it at 299 and think it is going to sell a lot. They are going to massively advertise in all ways possible that the PS3 is 299, and it's going to be annoying. Regardless, their is a very high probability this move will be made before the end of their fiscal year, which is the end of March.

All-software BC could be a good thing...perhaps it would enable them to truly up the resolution in games (instead of just upscaling them)?

Ha! What a surprise! I predicted that when Sony announced a even newer version of the PS2. It's a way for them to keep the money flowing.

anyone know if / when the PS3 will include an IR port for remotes? If that is never coming, then I might just jump now for $319.
