802.11g speed survey

I wonder what speeds people are seeing with 802.11g routers/APs. Can you detail the gear you use and the speed at short distances?

I am rather surprised at the slow speed. I wasn't expecting 54Mbit, just about half, but I'm seeing 1/4. Some wireless channels seem more stable, some less stable (looking at Win8's copy speed graph), but they all appear to hit a ceiling of about 13Mbit.

This is with:
LevelOne WBR-3406TX v3 router
ASUS K55A laptop with Intel 2230 (similar results with Atheros AR9485)
2 meters distance

I suspect it's the router, but I do wonder if the laptop antenna configuration might have an effect as well.

I get at best 22mbps with one laptop on WRT54G. Other laptop struggles to get more than 5mbps.
Don't expect 54mbps, it is not full duplex

The number that appears in variety of configuration menus do not reflect the real "Speed".

Real "Speed" is measuring File transfer between Wireless and wired computer.

Decent to Good 802.11g usually yield between 1.6MB/sec to 2.2MB/sec. (B=Byte) of transfer per sec.

17mbps would still be disappointing. 22mbps is more palatable.

24.63 down, 5.95 up just now with a WRT54GL. Comcast Performance. I am very happy with the WRT54GL. When I compare wireless and ethernet connected speeds on it they are nearly identical with the difference being less than the variation between back to back tests on either connection method.

Your range with 802.11g (and any 2.4Ghz wireless) will be HEAVILY dependent on how much interference there is.

Have you done a survey of how many networks are around you? The noise from other networks reduces my 802.11n network to barely 5Mbps on 2.4Ghz. On 5Ghz, with the same devices, I get 60-80Mbps.

Not that many networks, much further away than my local one, and I tested during the night. But anyway, I tried multiple channels: there's a difference in speed stability, but the peak is the same 13Mbps. With a good channel it's mostly flat.

Around 20 mbps. If you have lesser speed check for noise and obstacles. It also depends on the quality of wireless adapter on your laptop.

OP you probably are wasting your time. The only way to resolve it as is is to spend some money, and then you probably will end up Squeezing few extra Mb/sec.

You need more Bandwidth get a Dual Band Wireless Router and get on ebay a Dual Band card for you laptop. On the cheap side you can do refurb Router and a card for around $50.

It was curiosity, rather than trying to find a way to speed it up with the current router. I wouldn't mind faster speeds, but I won't get a new router at current prices. The router would also have to include 4-5 Gbit ports, USB, and 3rd party firmware compatibility.

I do that so infrequently that I don't know and it isn't an issue for me. It would probably be a good reason to move on from my WRT54GL if I did more of that.
