802.11g NICs only operate at 802.11b speeds in ad-hoc mode

I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook with a 802.11g mini-pci card (atheros 5001+ chipset) and a Microsoft 802.11g usb nic (MN-710) on my network. I just cannot get them to talk to each other at speeds greater than 11Mbps (802.11b). Is this limitation due to operating in ad-hoc mode? I have the latest drivers for the mini-pci card and the current microsoft drivers for the NIC.

Since ad-hoc is not the preferred method of connection, there's less push to advance its capabilities. It may also be harder to provide a good signal between lower power devices to support a high datarate.
