I got one of those Abit Airpace cards that was like $1 after rebate, and decided to give Ubuntu a shot...but it's not supported, and apparently I'd have to go through a bunch of trouble to rig it to work with ndiswrapper. So, I was wondering if anyone knew of a good, relatively easy way to get this to work (i have to reboot into Windows every time I want to download something). If not, can anyone recommend a good, cheap adapter? I need one that can pick up reception REALLY well, the wireless here at my school sucks.

I was looking at this card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833130030

the MIMO thing intrigues me, my connection is always dropping out now and even when it's up it's still like 1 bar maybe 2. Any other suggestions?

ndiswrapper's not really that big of a deal although it's an ugly hack that should be avoided if possible. Boot into Linux and run the command 'lspci' and so we can figure out what chipset it uses, that'll give us an idea of what we're working with.

The only thing it said about any kind of nic was an ethernet controller by Atheros Communications; my onboard is disabled, so that must be it. It said unknown device.

Also does it matter that I'm using 64-bit Linux?

lspci will list all of the devices on the PCI bus whether there are drivers or not and no, the architecture doesn't matter.

If it really is Atheros you might be able to get by without ndiswrapper, what does the full line say?

RALink cards work well, I have one, but I'm not sure if Ubuntu includes the driver out of the box since it's not in the main kernel yet.

Could someone who uses linux please comment .

well, in the reviews of the one i posted, a few people mention that it works fine in linux, and one guy even mentions ubuntu. plus the prospect of getting a better signal really intrigues me since the wireless here is poor to begin with, so i think i'd rather spend the estra $5 on the one i posted if i were to buy a new one...but of course i would rather just this one work.

i looked up more info, and apparently the card isn't supported by madwifi. :( how can i get this thing working?!?!
