(the usb one can even be use on desktop right?, and therefore more versatile)

I would always go with the pcmcia card for a laptop. USB (even 2.0 I think) has a few timing issues where you will go from perfect pings to 5-second pings and back. It happens every few minutes for maybe 2 seconds, but it is enough to be annoying during video games. Plus, pcmcia fits more snug in the laptop and is less likely to get knocked off.

I googled didn't find that much about them other than they use a TI Chipset... No one is raving about them.. But no one is bitching either....

I'll post when I get them.

I think they supplied the guts for US Robotic's wireless stuff--which wasn't very good. I can't confirm this though. Just remember something about Airlink and USR.

This is the only information I could find about the router and it's not terribly complimentary. I was considering getting one since it has WPA until I read this:

Major pop-up-age!

Service Pack 2- install it, love it :)

Why do y'all assume that EVERYONE has Windows XP?

Firefox is much smaller and quicker to install than SP2 as well. :)

Thinking of getting the 802.11G PCI card for a HTPC I'm building. Anyone with this particular card want to give their opinions on it? Otherwise, I'll wait for the netgear to go on sale at CompUSSR and get that instead and deal with a rebate.

i'm sorta new to wireless stuff, but it seems from the posts that i've read that everyone LOVES linksys and netgear is a runner up.

any reason for this ranking? (drivers, quality of product, customer service, etc?)

also, besides linksys and netgear, what are some good brands to look at? (i'm looking for wireless G tech)

thanks!

Look into buffalo as well.

the reason to like certain brands over others (at least from the router aspect) is that the routers all have software installed to manage it. Some are very easy to run and manage, some not so much. Also the options available to you within the settings vary widely by manufacturer. Some give you the bare minimum and some have a suite of utilities hidden in it.
Netgear is nice and simple. It generally has a strong signal and works right out of the box for most people with a single wireless router.
No experience with linksys routers but their pci cards last forever. Both wireless and wired ethernet. I've had cards die but never a linksys.
The buffalo equiptment has so many options that many others don't that it is usually a very good buy considering the equivalent price.

The only brand which I would say to stay away from completely is SMC. Horrible signal. Horrible setup, just worthless software / options. It has been sitting in a box collecting dust since the day I first used it.

Deal is still going on. I ordered

2x AP
2x PCI
1x Cardbus

Total with 2nd day shipping was ~110$

I installed one AP and and one PCI and 1 Cardbus. Speeds and range where better than I had feared. I was able to average 20mbit/s with an aim file transfer using the wlan utility that is included. That was with WEP 128 or no encyption. Setting up for WPA I saw my speed drop to about 13mbit/s. I have the AP on one end of my apartment and took my laptop down to the other end and I had full signal and speed. I will do some extended range testing when I head out for work. My only complaint is I can't seem to find a way to shut off NAT on the wan interface. Compared to my orinoco residential gateway flashed with the ap500 firmware I see much better speed and range.
