now that airport encryption has been hacked what are some alternatives?
i'm looking for free, easy to use VPN software for both win2k, win 98 and mac OS9
and how does it work? do i need a server? eg. if i have a mac laptop on airport, does is need to connect to a 'server'?

I would just use 802.11b

There are currently no other wireless standards out there. Homeplug is coming out in the future (networking over your electrical outlets), but that isn't wireless. As far as I know, I haven't heard of a good alternative for wireless access other than 802.11b.

As for the VPN software, Windows 2000 has a version of VPN, but we don't use that. We have a Cisco router and a VPN client from Cisco that we use. You don't need VPN.

VPN and wireless are entirely different. VPN is Virtual Private Network and that is used to connect two sites over the internet and make it secure. Wireless 802.11b is a standard used on a LAN that connects your computers wirelessly to your network.

You might want to do some reading on VPN and wireless to get more knowledge on them both. Both VPN and wireless knowledge are useful to have, even though they are so different. 🙂

Some people also tunnel through ssh

A VPN usually gives you a secure connection between 2 servers or a client and a server.

You might also try researching IPSEC.

Thanks for providing the link, Ive never looked for it before so I wasnt sure where to get it 😉

And tunneling through OpenSSH can be a pain. I havent done any hardcore research into it, but trying to figure out the command line syntax to tunnel over an ssh connection is complicated 😛

<< Or just use 802.11b equipment that automatically changes the WEP key every so often. >>

but changing keys every couple hours has to be a pain...
