Ok guys, I've got a question. I've become very interested in building some kind of robot, and am wanting to control it through my pocket pc's 802.11b card. I plan on putting an old computer on the robot, and I would also put a wireless modem in the computer on the bot... I plan on having the computer control the servos, etc. Anyways, anyone know what else I would need to accomplish this? I know I'd need the two network cards, but what else? An access point? Any ideas? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Two Wireless cards can communicate between themselves if they are set to Ad-Hoc mode.

If your PDA card has Ad-Hoc settings, you can get a Wireless Client Card (not Wireless Modem) for the Robot?s computer.

If you want more then one source to control the Robot, install a Wireless Access Point (WAP) on the Robot, and you will be able to communicate from multiple sources. Currently WAPs cost only $30-$40 more then Client Card.

More info here: What do I need for wireless networking?

Thanks JackMDS!

Hrm, not sure if my PDA has ad-hoc settings... it's an Audiovox Maestro.

Thanks for the help though!

Oh yeah, what kind of range do you think I could get with this setup? As in, how far would the remote controlled robot be able to go before it just stop being controlled.

Thanks again.

With Visual Contact between the controller to the Robot 100-150?.

In a house between rooms (controller in one room, Robot in another room) 20-30?.

The range will depend on the Hardware quality, and the Nature of the electrical obstacles.
