802.11b neighbors and my 802.11g network

I'm thinking of setting up a 802.11g network in the home (currently running a 802.11b one). Hower, I read somewhere that 802.11b units on a g network will cause the access point to revert to 802.11b. Now I'm curious wiht neighbors who I know have wireless as I can connect to their access points (but I don't cuz I have my own) will cause my network to default to 802.11b which will ruin the entire point of going to g.

I currently use WEP + MAC filtering on my own network. Maybe I could just set the access point for 802.11g only? It's just a waste of money if the wireless will work on the old speed.

The speeds only drop if a B client actually authenticates to your network. I'm not sure if it drops while the client is attempting to authenticate to your network. At any rate, you should have the option to only allow G clients on your network...I'd use it.

Since you have other AP's in the area just make sure you're not using the same channel as them. 11b AP's shouldnt cause your speeds to drop unless they're AP's on your actual network. Just put yourself on another channel for interference reasons.

hmmm is there a good way to determine what channel the neighbors are using and use a different one?

move to channel 11... Get some protection and enjoy your new wireless lan

My guess is that you know that to get the g speeds you are going to have to upgrade all of the network cards to g speed..... If you dont want one computer to run at g then just leave the b card in it...
