802.11b information-gathering software?

In my college apartment building, there are a LOT of visible wireless networks. Most of them are on channel 5. However, when I try putting my router on other channels, it seems to slow down instead of speed up. Is there any software that can gather information about the visible 802.11b networks and find out which channel everything is on? I want to put my network in its own frequency channel so that I can maximize bandwidth (large file transfers are terribly slow and they get interrupted).
