802.11b and ad hoc networks

I have a desktop (with a modem) and a laptop. My understanding is that if both had 802.11b wireless cards they could connect via an "ad hoc" network. Would this allow the laptop to share the desktop's ethernet connection without the need for a wireless access point?

Yeah. it will work.

You will need to use software NAT to share the Internet.
