i have 2 laptops that i use wifi on. 1 is on 802.11b and the other on 802.11g ... i'm using open auth wep for wifi and turn down my transmit power in a bid to secure the network. throughout mmy apt, i'm at, or close tot 100% signal strength/quality.

there are a lot of networks (secured/non-secured) near me, and almost all of them are on channel 6, with a bunch on channel 11. thus, i chose channel 1 ... however, i seem to get dropped more often ono channel 1 than on channel 6. can anyone speculate why?

1.faulty equipment.
2.There's a wireless network near you on channel 1, and the admin disabled broadcast so you can't see its existance.
Try another channel.
Good luck.

i know for a fact that chan6 has less drops, but chan6 also has a lot of networks. thats the part that puzzles me.

Channels 1, 6, and 11 do not overlap. If you have trouble with 1 and 6 try 11. What client card do you have? Not too many cards the newest revision of stumbler doesn't work with.
